Rivers State police Command has revealed that the administration of criminal justice law (ACJL) gives women right to bail a suspect in police custody.
The commissioner of police, CP Zaki Ahmed stated this during a one day training workshop on the implementation of administration of criminal justice law, organised by international federation of women lawyers (FIDA)
The commissioner who was represented by officer in charge of human right department, Rivers state police command, DSP Emmanuel Ukwanye, said the law is women friendly.
“With the emergence of this, it has really changed a lot of things positively. Now, the right of victims, suspects, police and every other person is duly protected. The procedures are well spelt out, things are lot different and it also facilitate the justice system in general”
He further noted, that suspects can also be bailed while investigation are ongoing
On his part, Honourable Justice Enebeli Adolphus, said the implementation of the ACJL law would be achieved by the role of all players in the state criminal justice system.
“The Administration Criminal Justice Law has its own noble objectives, its self sufficient. The problem is not with the law, but the problem is in the implementation of the law by all players, starting from the police, honourable attorney general office, the court, prison authority and government.
All the players need to act in concert towards the actualization before the law can work out, in other to enable the capacity of the role player. ”
Also speaking, the chairperson international federation of women lawyers, Antonia Osadebe, said the criminal justice law is in practice in the state, adding that it will help protect the right of women and children.
“As FIDA is protecting and preserving the right of women and children in the state, with the administration criminal justice law now being adopted in Rivers State, it will help us in our job with it being implemented. We will achieve a lot in protection and preservation, especially where women are being intimidated, their properties trying to be acquired or police arresting them unlawfully because she is a woman “
