The Grassroots Development Initiative has been accused of having a hand in the recent explosion that rocked the secretariat of the Action Peoples Party last week in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

GDI is the political group of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike which he used in winning the governorship election in 2015 and 2019 respectively.

The National Chairman of the Action Peoples Party, Uche Nnadi, described the explosion as treasonable and an act of terrorism.

Nnadi said the incident occurred a few minutes after some members of the party left the office after a meeting at midnight on Sunday, expressing happiness that God spared their lives.

Speaking with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, a former member of GDI and now a stalwart of the Simplified Movement said the APP became an enemy of GDI after Governor Siminalayi Fubara indicated an interest in working with the APP in the forthcoming LG poll.

The governor was said to have endorsed the APP as the party that will produce his preferred candidates for the October 5 local government election in the state.

According to the stalwart, the decision of the governor did not go down well with GDI members in the state who are the predominant force in PDP at the grassroots level.

The stalwart said, “The LG election is mainly a contest between the Simplified Movement of Governor Fubara and GDI of the FCT Minister, Wike and it is not wise for both political groups to be in PDP and vote against each other during the LG election.

“This was why the governor decided to work with another political party and the APP happened to be the party that the governor had endorsed.

“GDI knows something about the bombing of the APP secretariat, hence the need for the police to investigate GDI as I know for sure that GDI members can do anything dangerous in order to win elections.”
