Buhari has failed – Obasanjo insists

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again criticised the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, maintaining that the government has failed.

The former president said this on Monday when he received members of the New Nigeria group at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

“The first lesson I learnt in my military training is never reinforce failure; what we have now is failure. Never you reinforce failure, let failure be failure,” he said.

Obasanjo had on Tuesday (January 23, 2018) issued a 13-page statement, criticising President Buhari’s performance and called for a new movement to salvage the country from its challenges.

He had also warned the President against seeking re-election, alleging that the present government has failed in one of the areas it pitched as its ‘key point of action’ when it assumed office – the anti-corruption fight.

Incompetent Government?

Addressing members of the New Nigeria group at his residence, the former president rated the present administration as ineffective.

He said, “The truth is this, when you have an ineffective and incompetent government, we are all victims and don’t let anybody deceive you.

“Those of you who are in business, your business could have been better today if we have a competent and effective and performing government.”

20 Things to Remember When Rejection Hurts.

20 Things to Remember When Rejection Hurts
KWENTUA BENJAMIN.

Be OK with walking away…
Rejection teaches you how to reject what’s not right for you.

As you look back on your life, you will realize that many of the times you thought you were being rejected from someone or something you wanted, you were in fact being redirected to someone or something you needed.
Seeing this when you’re in the midst of feeling rejected, however, is quite tough. I know because I’ve been there.

As soon as someone critiques, criticizes, and pushes you away – as soon as you are rejected – you find yourself thinking, “Well, that proves once again that I’m not worthy.” What you need to realize is, the other person or situation is NOT worthy of YOU and your particular journey.

Rejection is necessary medicine; it teaches you how to reject relationships and opportunities that aren’t going to work, so you can find the right ones that will.

It doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough; it just means someone else failed to notice what you have to offer. Which means you now have more time to improve yourself and explore your options.

Will you be bitter for a moment?

Absolutely. Hurt? Of course, you’re human. There isn’t a soul on this planet that doesn’t feel a small fraction of their heart break at the realization of rejection. For a short time afterwards you will ask yourself every question you can think of…

What did I do wrong?
Why didn’t they care about me?
How come?
etc.

But then you have to let your emotions fuel you in a positive way! This is the important part. Let your feelings of rejection drive you, feed you, and inspire one heck of a powerful opening to the next chapter of your story.

Honestly, if you constantly feel like someone is not treating you with respect, check your price tag. Perhaps you’ve subconsciously marked yourself down. Because it’s YOU who tells others what you’re worth by showing them what you’re willing to accept for your time and attention. So get off the clearance rack.
And I mean right NOW! If you don’t value and respect yourself, wholeheartedly, no one else will either.

I know it’s hard to accept, but think about it…

All too often we let the rejections of our past dictate every move we make thereafter. We literally do not know ourselves to be any better than what some intolerant person or shallow circumstance once told us was true.

It’s time to realize this and squash the subconscious idea that you don’t deserve any better. It’s time to remind yourself that…

1. The person you liked, loved or respected in the past, who treated you like dirt again and again, has nothing intellectually or spiritually to offer you in the present moment, but headaches and heartache.

2. One of the most rewarding and important moments in life is when you finally find the courage to let go of what you can’t change, like someone else’s behavior or decisions.

3. Life and God both have greater plans for you that don’t involve crying at night or believing that you’re broken.

4. The harsh truth is, sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you have ever been to stand up taller and emotionally stronger than you ever were before.

5. It’s not the end of the world – it’s never the end of the world – and yet rejection can make the loss of someone or something you weren’t even that crazy about feel gut-wrenching and world-ending.

6. Sometimes people don’t notice the things we do for them until we stop doing them. And sometimes the more chances you give, the more respect you lose. Enough is enough. Never let a person get comfortable with disrespecting you. You deserve better. You deserve to be with someone who makes you smile – someone who doesn’t take you for granted – someone who won’t leave you hanging.

7. Some chapters in our lives have to close without closure. There’s no point in losing yourself by trying to fix what’s meant to stay broken.

8. Take a deep breath. Inner peace begins the moment you decide not to let another person or event control your emotions.

9. You really can’t take things other people say about you too personally. What they think and say is a reflection of them, not you.

10. Those with the strength to succeed in the long run are the ones who build themselves up with the bricks others have thrown at them.

11. Let your scars remind you that the damage someone has inflicted on you has left you stronger, smarter and more resilient.

12. When you lose someone or something, don’t think of it as a loss, but as a gift that lightens your load so you can better travel the path meant for you.

13. You will never miss out on what is meant for you, even if it has to come to you in a roundabout way. Stay focused. Be positive.

14. Rejections and naysayers aren’t that important in the grand scheme of things; so don’t let them conquer your mind. Step forward! Seriously, most of us do not understand how much potential we have – we limit our aspirations to the level someone else told us was possible.

15. Too many people over value what they are not and under value what they are. Don’t be one of them. Ultimately, you are who you are when nobody’s watching. Know this! And dare to be yourself, however awkward, different or odd that self may prove to be to someone else.

16. Comparing yourself to others, or other people’s perceptions, only undermines your worth, your education and your own inner wisdom. There’s no one who can handle your present situation better than YOU.

17. The more we fill our lives with genuine passion and purpose, the less time and energy we’ll waste looking for approval from everyone else.

18. You CAN use your struggles, frustrations, and rejections to motivate you rather than annoy you. You are in control of the way you look at life.

19. Sometimes transitions in life are the perfect opportunity to let go of one situation to embrace something even better coming your way.

20. Right now is a new beginning. The possibilities ahead are endless. Be strong enough to let go, wise enough to move forward, diligent enough to work hard, and patient enough to wait for what you deserve.

Afterthoughts

All details aside, you don’t need anyone’s constant affection or approval in order to be good enough in this world.
When someone rejects or abandons or judges you, it isn’t actually about you. It’s about them and their own insecurities, limitations, and needs.

So you don’t have to internalize any of it! Your worth isn’t contingent upon other people’s acceptance of you – it’s something inherent.

You exist, and therefore you matter. You’re allowed to be yourself.
You’re allowed to voice your thoughts and feelings.
You’re allowed to assert your needs. You’re allowed to hold on to the truth that who you are is more than enough.

And you’re allowed to let go of anyone in your life who makes you feel otherwise.

Your turn…

In what ways have you struggled with rejection?
How have you coped?

Rivers APC Sets Up Peace and Reconciliation Committee.

The All Progressive Congress, APC in Rivers State has constituted a committee after an extraordinary Rivers APC stakeholders meeting, on Monday in Port Harcourt.

The mandate of the committee is to mend perceived cracks within the fold of the party in the state and to reposition it ahead of 2019 general election.

Members of the committee includes:

1. Sen Wilson Ake – Chairman.
2. Hon Barr Adokiye Oruwari.
3. Hon Elder Austine Nwakoh.
4. Hon Mrs Mary Alagoa.
5. Hon Ted Oteh

There has been fractionalization within the ranks of the party in the state, with loyalists divided between the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial district in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe.

Senator Abe, who is said to be nursing a gubernatorial ambition, has had verbal confrontations with the Minister who is also the leader of the party in the state, with Amaechi saying during a courtesy visit of Ikwerre traditional elders in February that he will not support Senator Abe’s ambition.

The Minister is, however, said to favour candidates from the Riverine areas as opposed to upland areas with rumours making rounds that the likes of Tonye Cole and Dakuku Peterside, the DG of NIMASA are on the Minister’s radar.

Rivers State:Police recovers 120 weapons in two weeks.

Gladys Nweke

The Rivers State Police Command is upbeat about the voluntary response by arms bearing members of the public to submit their arms whether legally or illegally acquired arms as it has recovered about 120 arms in the on going mop-up exercise within two weeks.

The arms were recovered from 13 local government areas visited by the command’s Task Force on mop up of arms out of the twenty-three Local Government areas in the State.

Spokesman of the command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the sensitization embarked upon by the Task Force had been yielding results without any form of coercion.

He re-emphasized that anyone who failed to take advantage of the 21 days window created by the Inspector-General of Police, would have himself to blame.

“We have been making progress since we started this sensitization and I can tell you it has been yielding results.

“In the first week of this exercise, we recovered over a hundred arms. In another three days, we recovered 15 arms.

“Most of those who have been surrendering their arms have been doing so voluntarily.

“The IGP’s directive is being followed and people must understand that it is not targeted at anybody. We just want everyone to cooperate so we don’t have to break into people’s homes to retrieve arms,” he stated.

He warned that the command will go after those in possession of arms after the 21 days ultimatum as directed by the IGP.

The Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps: why Wike is right (Part 1)

By Enemi Alabo George

– Essence of Neighbourhood Security
– Proactivity, Rather than Reactivity
– Provisions of the Law
– Needless Worries
– Dakuku Peterside’s comments

The recent passage into law of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Security Corps bill (HA.8), 2018 by the Rivers State House of Assembly has elicited a cascade of reactions, positive and negative, for and against. In considering most of the negative reactions however, I noticed a recurrent decimal, a common factor, that they were borne out of ignorance, misinformation, unnecessary fear or suspicion, which to me is largely inexplicable and deeply surprising. To me and to my mind, anyone who has taken time to study the bill (which is now law) establishing the Rivers State Neighbourhood Security Corps would be glad and grateful to the almighty God, who has made this possible.

Section 14(2b) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) places as the most important responsibility on the government, the security and welfare of its people. It states thus: “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.” Please also recall that Section 13(1) (ibid) states that “it shall be the duty and responsibility of all organs of government and all authorities and persons, exercising legislative, executive or judicial powers to conform to, observe and apply the provisions of this chapter (chapter 2) of this constitution”.

If the above holds true and strong, then permit me to say that the government of Rivers State of Nigeria as is constituted today, has no choice but to protect its citizenry and their belongings. Perhaps, it was in anticipation of this scenario that on March 30th 1981, at the Conference of the Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO, Ronald Reagan said “government’s first duty is to protect the people…”
In avoiding rhetoric exuberance and complex ebullience, let me dwell slightly on, or emphasize the essence of NEIGHBOURHOOD SECURITY (emphasis deliberate).

NEIGHBOURHOOD SECURITY/WATCH
Neighbourhood watch or security all over the world has been considered as an effective and proactive measure towards preventing, combating and controlling crime. Crime combating should not necessarily be reactive but proactive. Reactive or responsive approaches to crime however effective ends up with casualties most times. Intelligence and information gathering has proven to be the best tool for preventing and containing crime world over. The proposed Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps is one of such innovative proactive approaches designed to create a safer and more efficiently secured state.

Martin Innes and Vanessa Jones, in a 2006 study titled Neighbourhood Security and Urban Change stated inter alia that “interventions carefully tailored to the local problems which people perceive to be risks to their security are more likely to promote neighbourhood security than generic approaches”. In Nigeria, some states facing peculiar security challenges have taken peculiar steps to contain such security situations through Neighbourhood Security. Cases in point are: The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency; The Civilian JTF found in the North East, the Benue State Livestock Guard and a lot of other such instances.

PROACTIVITY, RATHER THAN REACTIVITY
Stated earlier is the fact that in combating crime and other anti-social vices, proactive measures prove always to be more effective than reactive measures, and proactivity in security has everything to do with intelligence gathering. Much more than once, we have been told that the Nigeria Police does not have sufficient manpower to police all of us. I do not want to bother about figures here, as it relates the work force of the police “force”. It however is clear to us all that they cannot be everywhere.

The Neighbourhood Safety Corps bill (now law) which was proposed by the Gov. Nyesom Wike led administration to the Rivers State House of Assembly, passed into law and subsequently assented to creates an effective architecture for intelligence gathering and information sharing. Paragraph 2(2) of the law inter alia, states the objectives of the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps as:

(a) Gathering information about crime, crime in progress, suspicious activities and crime suspects away from other things;
(b) Making available such relevant information on crime, crime in progress, suspicious activities and crime suspects to the Police or other security agencies that require it;
(c) Putting structures in place to ensure that hoodlums and cult groups do not have opportunity to operate within the state;
(d) Undertaking routine motorized patrol day and night;
(e) Reducing the crime rate and ensuring that offenders are identified and made to account for their misdeeds;
(f) Following up on arrest of offenders to the court and ensuring justice;
(g) Timely reporting of suspicious activities and crimes in progress to the police or other security agencies;
(h) Improving relationship between the police and the community as it concerns law enforcement;
(i) Contributing in maintaining community peace;
(j) Providing the police with relevant information that will enhance their understanding of how to effectively police the communities and;
(k) Assisting the police carry out any other lawful activities in maintaining law and order.
These objectives reflect the intendment of the creators of the law in very vivid terms and should give everyone every sense of comfort. The law is forward and forthright in its intentions.

NEEDLESS WORRIES
A few worries, needless and unwarranted albeit, have been expressed by a select few from the opposition party in Rivers State, APC. Needless because all issues raised had been adequately catered for by the law creating the organization. The law places levels of control to be exercised by the Police and other security agencies. The law spells it out clearly that members of the group can only carry light arms, subject to approval by the police. Of course, members of this organization who are expected to disarm armed criminals cannot do that with bear hands. This is only rational. Again, another strong measure of control is the fact that every member must undergo vetting and clearance by the Police and other security agencies before recruitment. Functions of the agency found under paragraph 8(1c) of the law is said to include among other things:

to “approve the recruitment and training of eligible persons as corps members in all L.G.As of the state. Provided that persons can only be employed as corps members… after security clearance by the Police.”
The board of the Neighbourhood Security Agency also has as members, the Commissioner of Police of Rivers State and the Director of the Department of State Security (DSS). How much more control can anyone ask for? These controls make the agency a properly structured one.

I read with shock comments made by Dakuku Peterside in an interview published by the Neighbourhood online newspaper on the 15th of March, 2018, in which he was quoted to say “who will train the so-called Neighbourhood Watch members? Who selects and profiles them? Who accounts for their activities?” http://theneighbourhoodonline.com/…/we-will-challenge-wike-… The minute I read this, I realised that “my governor, my governor” had not read the law. Perhaps if certain people took out time to read a bit more, we would have a better society. These questions raised have been anticipated and adequately catered for by the law.

The Publicity secretary of the APC in Rivers State also said in an interview published on punch.com on the 25th of March 2018 that “we have our own idea of steps to take against the corps and this includes, but not limited to robustly resisting it with our own corps, and you can take that to the bank” He went on to say that “…we shall set up a parallel corps of Rivers State. We will sell the goat the same way it was sold to us.” As reprehensible, malevolent, backstreet and embarrassing this statement was, it got me really thinking. I probably did not realise up till that point, that he was a part of this government and Rivers State was some sort of goat farm. God help us.

Let me for now, leave you with the words of Barack Obama, which he said to an audience in Kenya, on the 28th of August, 2006, at the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya. “In the end, if the people cannot trust their government to do the job for which it exists, – to protect their common welfare – all else is lost”.

In part two of this piece, I shall talk about asymmetric considerations and approaches, practical examples and current realities.

BREAKING: 18 killed, 84 wounded in Boko Haram attack in Borno State.

Not fewer than 18 persons have been killed and 84 injured in Maiduguri after an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Bale Galtimari village in Jere Local government area of the Borno state, residents said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that echoes from sporadic gunshots and multiple explosions which lasted for hours on Sunday evening, were heard from the outskirts of the city. Bale community is about 20 kilometres away from Maiduguri.

Competent security sources told NAN that a number of insurgents attacked Bale-Shuwa and Bale-Kura communities near Maiduguri in an attempt to infiltrate the town at about 8: 00 p.m.

Some residents claimed the insurgents came on a convoy of utility vehicles, motorcycles and suicide bombers as well as armed gunmen.

The source, according to NAN’s report, also disclosed that the insurgents parked their vehicles few meters away from a security check point and sneaked into the community.

The source added that the security operatives engaged in fierce gun battle with the insurgents who detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and shot sporadically.

“Dozens of people including women and children were wounded from the explosion and gun shots.

“Due to darkness dead bodies were not evacuated immediately because there were suicide bombers among the attackers,” the added.

However, the Commander of the Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, denied any death on the side of his soldiers or civilians in the attack.

Reacting to NAN inquiry in a text message he said, however, that some of the Boko Haram insurgents were killed.

“That’s not correct. There was an attack which was repelled and some Boko Haram insurgents were killed by gallant soldiers.

“However, Boko Haram came with suicide bombers who denoted their vests while running from the troops fire in a nearby community and that led to 14 civilians being injured from the blasts.”

Barry Mpigi’s media boys desert Kairos, as APC issues 1 month ultimatum.

The last may not have been heard of the rumors of defection making rounds about one of the pillar supporters of the Senator Magnus Ngei Abe’s faction of the Rivers State APC and the member representing Eleme/Tai Federal constituency, Hon. Barry Mpigi.

A source told TPCN that plans have been cemented for the House of Reps member to decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party in weeks to come.

The source who is privy to the matter said that Hon. Mpigi has also tipped his media boys in KAIROS Media Group to exit the group as he is on his way to PDP.

This development followed the recent formal defection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) member of the House of Assembly from Tai and a loyalist of Mpigi, Matthew Dike, who defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) weeks ago.

Rivers State Governor, it was gathered, is doing everything to deplete the ranks of the ruling APC in the state, a development that have brought mistrust in the APC.

According to several sources, at the just concluded National Working Committee (NWC) meeting of the APC, it was gathered that Hon. Mpigi was spotted at the venue but the Rivers State Chairman of the APC, Davis Ikeanya, rushed to his seat shortly before the arrival of President Mahammadu Buhari and held him by the hands as one leading him out of the venue.

It was then Hon. Mpigi tried to resist and the chairman began shouting and asked if he was for the APC or the PDP.

He (Hon. Mpigi) was however given a one month ultimatum to either reinstate his membership with the APC or do that which he has in mind.

Gladys Nweke

The Amanyanabo of Okochiri Community in Okirika Local Government Area of Rivers State, His Royal Majesty, King Ateke Tom, has said that the era of the use of arms as a way of seeking government attention should be over now.

The former Niger Delta agitator, described as criminals, those using arms to draw government’s attention to some issues rather than embracing dialogue.

His Royal Magesty was reacting to an online video clip posted by a militant group calling him to make peace between him and the leaders in Akwa Ibom State.

He noted that dialogue is the best answer for aggrieved persons and the lasting solution to any problems.

The Okochiri monarch stressed that government should stop negotiating with criminals, insisting that any group that bears arms should be regarded as a criminal group.

The royal father said that he could not identify the faces of members of those militant group in the video.

“I would not have given attention to the clip as I do not identify with criminals and cannot. But for the sake of records and integrity, I wish to say that I do not know the hoodlums in that video.

“As a peace ambassador, who ensures peace, love and development among youths, communities and the leaders, I don’t associate with criminals and hoodlums.

“I want the youths not to allow themselves to be used as enemies of the society to cause crisis in communities. The time for using arms to get attention is over.

” If there is a misunderstanding within, the youths should approach the right channel to settle their problems” the monarch said!

The monarch expressed the need for those in the video clip to be fished out and investigated, adding that the video clip was geared at destroying people’s image.

Ateke charged the youths to continue to assist security operatives to fight crime and ensure the existence of peace in the Niger Delta.
