Traditional Ruler Criticizes Fubara for Sacking Him While in Coma

The former Chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Sergeant Chidi Awuse, has expressed deep sorrow over his removal from the position by Governor Siminialayi Fubara, during a time when he was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) fighting for his life.

Awuse, the traditional ruler of Emohua Local Government Area, revealed that despite his critical condition, the governor publicly criticized him, calling him “unsteady,” despite his prior efforts in supporting Fubara’s rise to governorship.

Speaking over the weekend, Awuse addressed the issue during a visit from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a delegation of his political allies, who came to his palace to celebrate his recovery from a severe illness.

Awuse had been relieved of his position on June 21, with Governor Fubara appointing Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, the paramount ruler of Apara Kingdom, in his place.

The governor had justified the decision by accusing Awuse of being inactive and failing to provide effective leadership within the council.

However, Awuse, who had just returned from a medical trip, described Governor Fubara’s actions as a display of ingratitude. According to Awuse, he had formally notified the governor three times about his need to travel for medical reasons, and each of his letters was acknowledged by the state government.

“I never went out of this state without telling my governor; not just once. So, when somebody said he didn’t know where I went to, I was surprised.

“I was sacked from my seat the day I was in ICU. I was in a coma for 10 hours. I told only Wike because everybody rejected me.

“The government I was serving rejected me. I am learning how to stand up because I was in the ICU for six weeks with gadgets all over my body and was fed through my nose. But the governor said I was a man of questionable character, and I am not steady. That is one quality I don’t deserve. Call me any other name but I am a steady human being.”

In response, Nyesom Wike expressed surprise and disappointment at the governor’s remarks about Awuse, whom he praised as a highly regarded and dedicated political figure.

Wike emphasized that Awuse was one of the major figures responsible for securing Fubara’s candidacy for the governorship under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“He was one of the few people who made sure on the day we were deciding who would run as a governor, he canvassed that the ticket be given to the governor.

“But he was on television casting aspersions on somebody who all of us revered in politics. That is all part of life,” Wike said.

If you are Angry i’m working for Tinubu, go hug transformer – Wike

At the recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Congress in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, reaffirmed his satisfaction with serving in President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Despite being a chieftain of the opposition PDP, Wike remains unapologetic about his decision, stating, “We are fully in government. We are fully in Tinubu’s government. I have no regrets about it, and I will continue to be there. Anybody who is angry should go and hug Transformer.”

Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister has sparked discussions, with some linking it to his contribution to Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election. His decision to work against his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the election, has also been cited as a reason for his appointment.

However, Wike remains resolute in his commitment to the current administration, despite calls from some PDP members to sanction him for his perceived dalliance with the ruling party.

In his speech, Wike also addressed his successor, Governor Siminalyi Fubara, and other PDP governors, warning against attempts to wrestle the party’s structure in Rivers from his grasp. He emphasized his determination to maintain control, stating, “I will put fire in their states… I’ve told them, now you have started, when I will start, don’t say I’m the one that destroyed PDP, you are the one that is trying to destroy PDP.”

Wike’s unwavering stance has sparked intense debate within the PDP, highlighting the complexities of political allegiances and the challenges of navigating party loyalty. As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: Minister Wike remains steadfast in his commitment to the Tinubu administration, even as he faces criticism from within his own party.

More trouble for Fubara, if…

By Mark Lenu

The forthcoming local government election in Rivers State can best be described as the last straw that broke the camel’s back as it will determine if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is in charge of the state or the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.

This is because the financial autonomy granted to local governments is a sovereign power bestowed on the third tier of government to operate independently which Wike wants to take advantage of to intensify his political fight against Fubara.

During the just concluded factional PDP state congress, Wike vowed to continue his political fight against Fubara, describing the support he gave Fubara during the 2023 governorship election as a waste of investment.

The FCT minister wants to control the state leadership of PDP as usual which he has achieved through the recently held party congresses and he will in turn use his GDI group to field his preferred candidates for the October 5, LG election.

Since the minister had tried to use the state legislature to strongly oppose the Fubara-led administration but did not succeed, the forthcoming LG election is the last resort of Wike to fight the governor if those who will be the minister’s candidates are allowed to win the poll.

Having seen this coming, Fubara went further to establish a movement christened: Simplified Movement and he is likely to use another political party which many have said is APP to field his preferred candidates for the forthcoming LG poll.

The RSIEC Chairman, Adolphus Enebell is a retired judge of the state high court who benefited during Wike’s reign as governor and was appointed by same Wike to serve as RSIEC chairman. Will the FCT minister not have some degree of influence on the RSIEC chairman in the forthcoming LG election?

With the inclusion of LG financial autonomy, there will certainly be more trouble for Fubara if the next elected chairmen and councilors that will emerge after the LG election are loyal to Wike.

NFF Sets Precedent with Historic Retirement Ceremony

In a groundbreaking move, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership hosted a pioneering send-off ceremony for 20 dedicated staff members who retired between 2019 and the present.

This unprecedented event not only celebrated their remarkable service but also provided financial benefits, setting a new standard for employee recognition. The esteemed retirees, including former Director of Competitions Bola Oyeyode, former Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria National League Lawrence Katken, and former Director of Finance & Admin Babatunde Akinsanya, among others, were honored for their tireless contributions to the Federation.

NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi emphasized the significance of this occasion, stating, “We aim to acknowledge and reward the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our staff, demonstrating that their efforts are valued and appreciated.”

This ceremony marks a significant shift in the NFF’s approach to employee recognition, sending a clear message that their well-being and contributions are paramount. As Dr. Sanusi noted, “The interest of the Federation and Nigeria Football is paramount, and we will continue to prioritize rewarding excellence.”

Babatunde Akinsanya, speaking on behalf of the retirees, praised the Ibrahim Gusau administration for this innovative initiative, which will undoubtedly benefit future generations of staff members.

This historic event sets a new benchmark for employee appreciation in Nigerian football, reflecting the NFF’s commitment to valuing and supporting its dedicated staff.

FCT Minister Wike Issues Stern Warning to PDP Governors

In a bold move, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, has cautioned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors against attempting to transfer control of the party’s structure in Rivers State to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking at the PDP state congress in Port Harcourt, Wike emphasized his unwavering commitment to maintaining control of the party’s structure in Rivers State. He declared, “We will not relinquish control of the PDP structure in Rivers State to anyone, no matter the circumstances.” Wike’s warning comes on the heels of the PDP Governors’ Forum’s recent endorsement of Fubara, who has been engaged in a public feud with the minister.

Undeterred, Wike vowed to resist any attempts to undermine his influence within the party, stating, “I will not hesitate to take drastic measures to protect our interests in Rivers State and beyond.” The minister, who previously served as governor of Rivers State, urged party members to remain united and focused on reclaiming control of the state government in 2027.

“We have overcome challenges before, and with divine support, we will triumph again,” he assured. Wike’s assertive stance has sent a clear message to PDP governors and stakeholders, signaling his determination to maintain control of the party’s structure in Rivers State and protect the interests of his loyal supporters.

Man detained for alleged gang rape of teenage girl in Rivers community

The Egi Divisional Police Headquarters in Obite, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State, has detained a man identified as Honest, reportedly in his late 20s, for abducting and allegedly ganged raped a 14-year-old girl from dusk to dawn.

Honest is accused of conspiring with his younger brother identified as Okwukwe, to commit the crime in Erima community, within the LGA.

A source from the community told our Correspondent that the siblings abducted the teenage girl evening of Sunday, 25 September 2024, while she was walking on a lonely path on her way to her brother’s house in the community.

In an interview, the 2nd in Command of ONELGA Security Planning and Advisory Committee ( OSPAC), Egi Command, Onuigba Chinonye Aboy, from the Erima community disclosed that they got information about the missing girl during their patrol.

“I was in patrol with some of my boys when we met one woman crying that since Sunday evening 25 September 2024, her 14-year-old girl had been missing till that Monday afternoon 26 September 2024.

“I asked the woman which area, and she directed us. We now began an investigation, and through the help of some good neighbors, we found out where the little girl was.

“When we went into the place, we saw two brothers, senior and junior abusing the little girl of 14 year old. In the process of trying to arrest them, the senior one resisted arrest trying to fight us.

“As we were dragging with him, the junior one ran away, while we apprehended the senior one and handed him over to Egi Police Division in Obite on Monday evening.

“My advice to other criminals that would want to get involved in the same crime, is that we will also send them same place we have sent this person if they do not want to change.

“If they change, the community will contain us and them, but if they do not want to change this community and Egi entirely will not contain OSPAC and the criminals”.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command SP Grace Iringe Koko, when contacted confirmed the incident.

She disclosed that one of the suspects had been arrested while the Commissioner of Police Rivers State, CP Olatunji Disu directed that the suspect as well as the case file be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Port Harcourt.

According to her, CP Disu has mandated the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to ensure the fleeing suspect is arrested, adding that all perpetrators of crime must face the consequences of their actions.

In the meantime, evening of Saturday, 31 August 2024, our correspondent gathered that the suspect had been transferred to SCIID.

UPTH urges public to opt for minimally Invasive surgeries…calls on FG to setup regional medical centers

By Tina Amanda

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has encouraged the public to request minimally invasive techniques when undergoing surgeries.

This appeal was made by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Professor Datonye Alasia, during the hospital’s monthly grand rounds organized by the Minimal Access Surgery Unit. The event, themed “Minimal Access Surgeries in UPTH: Past, Present and Future,” highlighted the benefits of these advanced surgical methods.

Professor Alasia noted UPTH’s significant achievements in minimally invasive surgeries for women, children, and adults. He emphasized that the procedures are not only more efficient but also more cost-effective compared to traditional open surgeries.

He further explained that the hospital is expanding its use of these advanced techniques, moving away from conventional open-incision methods.

“The aim of the grand round is to create an avenue for cross-fertilization ideas, discuss achievements and challenges facing the different departments in the hospital, as well as create awareness to members of the public about specialized and high-end services which the hospital provides.

“So today’s ground rounds were focused on minimally invasive or access surgeries, talking about those procedures you carry out without putting a big cut to gain access to the surgical site using cameras and some delicate equipment either to diagnose what the problem is or to offer treatment which could be surgical.

“This cuts across various areas, the intestinal tract, the chest, thorax lungs, the heart, the brain, kidneys, and urinary tract, obstetrics and gynecology, and even children.

“What we have today was a summation of all of those services and so we have been able to see a whole lot of interesting things that have given benefits to many patients and of course, those services would have come at a cost that is more affordable and competitive because of you were to pay for those services in other places, it would actually cost a bit more.

“So we are working to see how we can scale up the extent of the minimal access services so that we can do much more than we are currently doing now”.

“The traditional open method is okay, but the advantages of this minimal access technique are less pain afterward, early recovery, and early return to work.

“We have demonstrated from the cases that we put together that this is possible. So the public should go towards demanding minimal access techniques whenever surgery is to be done, in UPTH, a lot is happening despite the challenging times.”

The Director, of UPTH Minimal Access Surgery Programme, Professor Emeka Ray-Offor, urged the Federal Government to implement policies preventing public officials from seeking medical treatments abroad for surgeries and other healthcare services readily available in Nigeria.

He emphasized that such measures would not only strengthen the country’s healthcare system but also ensure accountability and boost confidence in local medical expertise.

Professor Ray-, however, called on the government to strengthen specialized regional medical centers in the country to discourage medical tourism abroad.

“We should really look inwards to solving our problems, if the amount of money given to civil servants to go for medical treatments abroad is brought home and you have dedicated centers regionally and well funded, it will help to address these challenges. Although the government cannot do all of it, we have good-natured individuals in the private sector who can get involved.

“The government should make concerted efforts to encourage some of those practices that people are going abroad for and put a policy that no treatment available here should be sought abroad, if they are doing that, things would improve, for example, if you come to the hospital and hear that the governor is admitted in one ward, when you have a health challenge, you will equally go to the same place where the governor was admitted.

“We need to identify our strengths and strengthen them even more through regional centers, it is pretty capital intensive to have these technology-dependent practices in every state, so to say, regional centers, equip them, instead of sending people outside for medical tourism”.

Rivers: How We Found €100 in a Bale Bag

Every Wednesday, my mom’s excitement was palpable as she opened a new bale of goods, filled with surprises like clothes, shoes, bags, and more. This particular Wednesday, the bale was filled with an assortment of bags. We usually stored the bale at my aunt’s place before taking it home, and this time was no exception.

As we collected the bags, my aunt had already set aside the old, unsellable ones to discard. However, my sister’s keen eye spotted one of these bags, and she begged to take it home. My mom agreed, but two weeks passed, and the bag remained untouched.

My mom, tired of seeing the bag lying idle, threatened to burn it if my sister didn’t start using it. But just as she was about to carry out her threat, another sibling intervened, claiming she would use the bag. The following Sunday, this sibling decided to carry the bag and even put ₦500 inside, hoping to get into the habit of using it.

However, she ended up carrying a different bag instead, and the old bag remained forgotten. Another week went by, and my mom was determined to burn the bag once and for all. She had already lit the fire when my younger sister suddenly remembered that her ₦500 was still inside the bag.

As she rushed to retrieve her money, she made a surprising discovery – €100 hidden deep within the bag. Excited, she showed it to my mom, and they quickly looked up the exchange rate online. To their astonishment, it was equivalent to ₦170,000!

“The bag, once destined for the flames, had turned out to be a treasure trove. My mom and sisters couldn’t believe their luck, and the bag, once deemed useless, had become a valuable possession”. My mum said.

Plot Twist: Labbadia Rejects Super Eagles Job

Reports Stipulate that the recently named Super Eagles coach, Bruno Labbadia, has turned down the position only three days after being introduced by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

“Bruno Labbadia will not be the new national coach of Nigeria. The 58-year-old German football coach had been negotiating with the Africans for a week a European sports website reported.
It was not common knowledge by that the NFF announced the coach without a signed and sealed contract.

Labbadia’s appointment was made public in an early morning tweet on Tuesday via the NFF’s X handle, tweeting as #thenff.
The statement read, “The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that it has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Super Eagles.”

“The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development sub-committee to appoint Mr Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles,” according to the federation’s General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

Balancing the books has proven to be a major hurdle in finalizing Bruno Labbadia’s appointment as Super Eagles coach. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) revealed in a statement that tax issues were the primary stumbling block. According to NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, the federation couldn’t agree to cover the significant tax percentage demanded by German tax authorities, ranging from 32% to 40% of Labbadia’s salary. This would have meant shelling out additional funds on top of his monthly wage, which was deemed unsustainable for the NFF.

“The NFF and Mr. Labbadia reached an agreement in principle before we made the announcement that he would become the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The tax details were never part of our discussions, and he had personally agreed to all terms before the tax issue came up. We were doing our best to be flexible in the discussions but he was adamant that the NFF had to pay the full tax amount as well. We simply cannot do that.”

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has announced a strong 23-man squad for the forthcoming qualifiers, marking the welcome return of key players from injury layoffs. Notably, Napoli’s prolific striker Victor Osimhen, Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, and stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong are all back in the fold, bringing a significant boost to the team’s attacking and defensive capabilities. Their return is a timely injection of experience and talent, setting the stage for a formidable performance in the upcoming qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) further made a strategic move by appointing Augustine Eguavoen, a seasoned football veteran and former Technical Director of the Super Eagles, as the interim head coach for the team’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Eguavoen, who boasts a deep understanding of the team and Nigerian football, will take the reins for the upcoming matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, bringing his wealth of experience and expertise to the role. This temporary appointment aims to provide stability and guidance for the team during this critical period, ensuring Nigeria’s chances of success in the qualifiers remain on track.
