Fund TB Activities to Stop Spread of Disease, CSO Tells Govt

By Tina Amanda

A call to action from the civil society group, Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project, has stressed the urgent need in the fight against tuberculosis (TB).

SCALE is urging governments at all levels, corporate bodies, stakeholders, and individuals to actively support activities related to TB care.

Speaking during a Private Sector Engagement Forum on the Nigeria Tuberculosis (TB) response, organized by Palladium under SCALE project, in partnership with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program (NTBLCP) Port Harcourt, Director Public Health, Cross Rivers State, Dr Jonah Bassey Ofo, said Tuberculosis is the second leading infectious killer globally after COVID-19 (above HIV and AIDS).

“Nigeria ranks first in Africa and sixth globally accounting for over 70% of the global gap in TB case detection and notification.

“Tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease it affects lots of people in the country and the disease is airborne, it is transmitted from person to person. When an individual inhales air from someone suffering from TB the person could get infected with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

“When an individual is infected after some time the person will come down with TB disease. In Nigeria lots of people be it children, women, and men get infected with the disease every year.

“It is a very big public health issue to us as health care providers. Funding activities that have to do with TB care are mostly donor-dependent, foreign donors make funds available for us to diagnose and treat patients.

“Out of Nigeria’s USS 388 million annual budget for TB, 6% is domestic-funded, 24% is donor-funded while 70% remains unfunded.

“Presently the donors are getting tired and there is a need for us as a country, as a people to see how we will live up to our responsibilities by making funds available for TB diagnosis and management.

Dr Stella Makpu, of the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program Abuja, said ninety percent of humans have in them the germ that causes tuberculosis.

“TB is in the air you find it anywhere if somebody that has TB coughs, sneezes, or talks the person releases an aerosol that contains the organism a nearby person can always breathe it in. It is risky to inhale air from TB patient q

“Ninety-something percent of the populace has that germ in us, because we do not have a predisposed immune system, so somewhere in the lungs they are quiet. But, if a person gets predisposed by contracting HIV or some disease like diabetes it could bring down the immune system and the TB will surface.

“gone are the days we sit in health facilities and allow patients to come to hospital, especially patients with TB. Now we are taking further steps to go the community and look out for them.

“That is why the SCALE project has decided to train the community and civil society groups. Now we reached out to the media as well as the private sector to help mobilize resources for treating TB patients and getting them diagnosed

“It is good we get them diagnosed on time to break of transmission, once that is done we will be able to curtail TB spread,. TB diagnosis and treatment is free”.

2 dead as political crisis in Rivers escalates with fatal shootings

By Tina Amanda

The political crisis in Rivers State took a dangerous turn on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, as unidentified assailants shot and killed a police officer and a vigilante personnel in Eberi, Omuma Local Government Area of the state.

We gathered that trouble started when some youth came to the secretariat to demand the Council Chairman not to be allowed into the secretariat following the expiration of his tenure on Monday June 17, 2024, and subsequent directive by the Rivers State Governor for Head of Local Government Administrations to take over the Councils pending further directive.

Report had it that some hoodlums claiming to be supporters of the two factional political groups in the state had engaged themselves in heavy fight causing panic and pandemonium in the community.

We cannot categorically establish how the Police officer and vigilante personnel at the scene was caught by bullet leading to their death.

A video which surfaced on internet hours after the shooting at Omuma Council secretariat showed one faction of the group involved in the crisis claiming to have taken over the Council while singing praise of a particular political leader.

Our Correspondent report that the Nigeria Police has taken over Obio/Akpor Council secretariat earlier seized by one of the Political factions in the state.other LGAs like Khana, Degema, Asari-Toru, Port Harcourt, Eleme, Ogu-Bolo etc were taken over by Youth said to be opposing the tenure elongation of the Local Government Chairmen

In her response to the crisis, Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe, confirmed the incident. “We lost a Police Officer and vigilante personnel at Eberi Omuma Investigation is ongoing”.

Human Rights Group Warns Ex-Council Members Against Crisis in Rivers

An international human rights organization, the Human Rights Advocacy Network (HRAN) has issued a strong warning to outgoing local government chairmen in Rivers State, sternly urging them to avoid actions that could lead to crisis. The group also called on security agencies to be proactive in maintaining law and order.

The chairmen’s tenure ended on June 17, 2024, but some, like Chidi Lloyd of Emohua Local Council, have refused to vacate their offices, referring to an alleged six-month tenure extension granted by the state assembly. However, HRAN clarified that this extension was nullified by a competent court, as it was inconsistent with the 1999 constitution and state laws.

“We read of the threats… to breach the peace and harmony in Rivers State by the immediate past local government chairmen… whose tenure expired by 12 noon today, June 17, 2024,” HRAN said in a statement. “The judgment of the Rivers State High Court which nullified the extension of the tenure of local government chairmen in Rivers State is yet to be set aside.”

The group apprised the former chairmen that their refusal to leave office is unlawful and treasonable, posing a direct threat to peace and stability. “The attempt to extend the tenure was unlawful and violated the officials’ oath of office,” HRAN pointed out.

HRAN encouraged security agencies to monitor the situation closely to prevent potential breaches of the law. “We call on security agencies to monitor closely, all 23 local government chairmen to prevent any potential breaches of the law,” the group said.

As earlier reported by TPCN news, Local unrest has already erupted, with youths blocking entrances to three Local Government secretariats in Kalabari, demanding the chairmen’s departure. Armed youths have also been seen patrolling riverine local councils.

The situation follows a series of court rulings, including a state High Court invalidating the Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024 and an Appeal Court ruling encouraging both parties to maintain the status quo. HRAN emphasized that the judgment nullifying the tenure extension remains in force, and the former chairmen’s refusal to vacate their offices challenges the rule of law and stability. “The refusal of the former chairmen to vacate their offices is a direct challenge to the rule of law and the state’s stability,” HRAN said. “We urge all parties to respect the court’s decision and ensure a peaceful transition of power.”

Turmoil as Angry Youths Break down Wike’s statue

Angry youths in Rivers State have pulled down the statue of the former governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike.

The enraged young people also brought down posters and signs featuring Wike and the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Bar George Ariolu. In a video posted on a social platform while the protest was on, three youths were seen struggling to drag the statue down.

However, some more of the protesters who trooped into the secretariat joined the force and pulled the effigy from its base, stating that the minister was no longer needed there. The situation in Rivers State where protesting youths pulled down the effigy of the former governor, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, seems to have stirred strong emotions.

The act of taking down billboards and banners with Wike’s image and that of the outgone Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Bar George Ariolu, indicates a significant display of discontent within the Obio/Akpor LGA in Port Harcourt. The video circulating online showing the youths’ efforts to topple the statue, followed by more protesters joining in, highlights the intensity of the protest.

It’s evident that the protesters felt strongly about their message that the minister is no longer welcome in that capacity. Such events often reflect the power of public sentiment and the impact it can have on political figures. The unity and determination shown by the protesters in expressing their views demonstrate the importance of civic engagement and the right to peacefully voice concerns.

Simi Battles Imposter Syndrome

Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, widely recognized as Simi, recently opened up about her experiences with imposter syndrome. The artist, who is also a mother, shared that she once felt a profound understanding of herself, but in recent years, she has struggled with a sense of losing her identity.

On her X handle, Simi expressed her thoughts on this journey: “For most of my life, I’ve had the privilege of knowing myself deeply and unwaveringly. But in recent years, I’ve also faced the discomfort of losing myself. Sometimes it was to make space for new aspects of my life, and other times, I just couldn’t find my way. I felt like a stranger to myself, and this version of me was the hardest to face in the mirror.”

Simi revealed that this internal conflict left her feeling like a stranger to herself. However, the process of creating her upcoming album, “Lost And Found,” played a significant role in helping her reconnect with her true self.

“Working on this album has been a crucial part of reclaiming the pieces of myself I feared were lost forever. I believe that self-discovery is an ongoing process, and if you’re willing to look, there’s always more to find. This album is a tribute to the continuous journey of finding and rediscovering oneself,” she wrote.

Simi further explained that the album reflects her efforts to reconnect with her passion for music, melodies, and love stories.

Rivers: Group asks LG chairmen to leave office immediately

By Mark Lenu

The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) has asked the 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State to leave office immediately, adding that their tenures have expired. The position of the group was made known in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Clifford Solomon, and sent to our correspondent on Tuesday.

“The Defence For Human Rights And Democracy (DHRD) is worried over the turn of events in the 21 out of 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. “It’s a known fact that the tenure of the elected Chairmen and Councillors of the local government areas has expired.

“Upon this, DHRD is asking these former officials to immediately and respectfully vacate the secretariat and hand over official documents to the Head of Local Government Administration as directed by the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Joseph Fubara. “Any loss of lives and properties orchestrated by these local government councils will be sued and prosecuted in court.

“DHRD is closely monitoring events in all the affected LGAs,” the statement said.

Youths storm 3 Kalabari LGAs, ask chairmen to vacate offices

Mark Lenu

As June 17 ended the tenures of all the local government chairmen in Rivers State, some youths had on Monday stormed the council secretariats of Akuku-Toru, Asari-Toru, and Degema LGAs of the state.

The youths said they will continue to occupy the secretariats of the three Kalabari-speaking LGAs until the council chairmen, Rowland Sekibo, Michael Williams and Onengiye-Ofori George vacate offices with immediate effect. However, there is a pending case before the court regarding the tenureship of the local government chairmen which is yet to be resolved.

Speaking with our correspondent, a retired army sergeant, Benibo Tariah supported the move to vacate the council chairmen from office. He said: “Why we are here is because the tenure of the council chairmen is over and they are saying they will not leave office.

“We, the people of Kalabari have decided to come out in a peaceful demonstration. We are now telling them that since their tenure is over, they should allow the new incoming to take over from them. “They should go home and relax, let better hands come and take care of the LGAs.”

Our correspondent reports that the youths tarried all night long at the three Kalabari council secretariats and were still there as of the time of filing this report.

MAYOR OF HOUSING, RIVERS TOURISM AGENCY IDENTIFY LOW HANDING FRUITS TO BOOST ECONOMY

The Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTDA) has teamed up with the Mayor of Housing to invigorate the state’s tourism and entertainment sectors. This collaboration aims to rejuvenate the local economy and improve the ease of doing business in Rivers State.

The partnership was solidified following the Rivers State Economic and Investment Summit, which concluded on May 23, 2024. At an event in the GRA, RSTDA’s Director-General, Yibo Koko, detailed the “low-hanging fruits” initiative designed to leverage the state’s inherent advantages.

Present at the event was My-Ace China, CEO of Housing and Construction Limited, who showed a strong commitment to this cause. Several banks have also expressed interest in supporting the Agency’s objectives under Sir Sim Fubara’s administration.

Tourism, a sector that once propelled the state’s economy, is being seen as a key to revitalization. The recent economic summit has given new life to RSTDA’s role, leading to fresh mandates and directives.

Director-General Yibo Koko spoke enthusiastically about the summit’s outcomes, especially highlighting the creative economy. He mentioned that the Mayor of Housing’s participation in a panel on the creative economy led to the decision to initiate the “Low Hanging Fruits Initiative.”

Koko discussed the damaging effects of negative online profiling. He pointed out that algorithms often pick up the most frequent content, which in Rivers State’s case, has been predominantly negative news. To counter this, the RSTDA aims to highlight the positive developments in the state, encouraging entrepreneurs and investors to drive economic growth.

My-Ace China expressed his excitement about working with the RSTDA and shared his experiences of the negative perceptions surrounding Port Harcourt. He recounted his initial skepticism due to fears about safety but was pleasantly surprised by the city’s hospitality and stability.

Mr. China described how Port Harcourt’s vibrant atmosphere and potential in the housing market contrasted sharply with the negative image painted by outsiders. He found the city welcoming and full of opportunities, which led him to stage the biggest event there, drawing significant attention and participation.

Mr. China identified political factors as contributing to the state’s negative image. He emphasized the importance of changing the narrative and highlighted his efforts in the comedy industry to promote Port Harcourt positively. His proactive approach in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has earned him recognition, proving that consistent positive actions can change perceptions.

Mr. China stressed the need for persistent positive storytelling to overshadow the negative. He proposed a competition among journalists to encourage more positive news coverage of Rivers State. By doing so, he believes the state can reclaim its status as a tourism hub.

Mr. China also touched on broader economic strategies, suggesting that awareness and deliberate narrative changes are crucial. He urged residents to talk positively about the state, arguing that if a significant portion of the population shares good news, it can shift perceptions and attract investment.

Mr. China shared a touching story about his project in Alesa Eleme, where initial fears were overcome by engaging with the community and providing essential support. His efforts in CSR have not only improved local conditions but also earned him respect and recognition from the community.

The mayor emphasized the importance of flooding search engines with positive stories to improve the state’s attractiveness. He called on everyone to contribute to this effort, ensuring that Rivers State climbs the ranks as a desirable destination for business and tourism.

Governor Fubara’s message is clear: Rivers State is ready for business. With the RSTDA leading the charge and strong support from enthusiastic entrepreneurs like the Mayor of Housing, the state is poised to shed its negative image and emerge as a center of tourism and economic activity.

Rotational presidency not priority now – Obi-datti

Yunusa Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Peter Obi/Datti Baba-Ahmed Presidential Campaign Council in 2023, argues that reforming Nigeria’s electoral process is more crucial than adopting a single-tenure rotational presidency. The proposal for a single six-year term for the presidency and state governors, coupled with rotational executive power among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, is intended to promote equal representation and reduce political tension. Proponents claim it could streamline governance and reduce the waste associated with frequent elections

However, Tanko believes that improving electoral integrity should take precedence. Current proposals for electoral reform aim to ensure all elections (presidential, governorship, legislative, and local) are held on the same day, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Other proposed amendments include measures to ensure that election results are accurately declared only after verifying voter accreditation and the integrity of electronic voting devices. Additionally, there are calls for legal accountability for electoral officers who declare false results and for resolving election-related disputes before officials are sworn into office

The debate over single-tenure rotational presidency is divided. Advocates argue it could address issues of exclusion and marginalization, ensuring that each geopolitical zone has a turn at leadership, which could foster national unity and development. Critics, however, warn that a single tenure might lead to increased impunity, as leaders would not be accountable to voters for re-election. They argue that a two-term system incentivizes better performance and accountability

while the idea of a single-tenure rotational presidency aims to address regional inequalities and streamline governance, electoral reform focused on enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency is seen by many, including Tanko, as a more immediate and necessary step for deepening Nigeria’s democracy.
