Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Davido headlined Ethiopia’s New Year celebration on September 10, 2024, marking a significant moment in the country’s cultural calendar.

This celebration was unique because Ethiopia follows the Ethiopian calendar, which is about seven to eight years behind the widely-used Gregorian calendar. As of this date, Ethiopia has just entered the year 2017.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, saw Davido electrify the crowd with an energetic performance, entertaining fans with his collection of hit songs.

Ethiopia’s distinct calendar system, also known as the Ge’ez calendar, originates from ancient times and follows a timeline that significantly differs from the Gregorian calendar.

The Ethiopian calendar is seven to eight years behind due to variations in the calculation of historical dates such as the Annunciation. Another distinct feature of this calendar is that it divides the year into 13 months—12 months consisting of 30 days, with an additional month of 5 or 6 days, depending on whether it’s a leap year.
