The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has given its word that the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) will proceed without disturbance despite the upcoming nationwide strike by organized labor unions scheduled to commence on Monday.
In a leaked memo addressed to school principals, the Ekiti Branch Controller for WAEC National Office stressed that the exams involving over 1.7 million candidates across the nation will not be affected by the impending strike action.
“The attention of Management of WAEC has been drawn to a notice of the commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC effective Monday, 3rd June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE 2024 goes on as scheduled,” the memo stated.
This information n aims to reassure students, parents, and educational institutions that the integrity and timing of the examinations will remain intact despite the industrial action.
While acknowledging the concerns of the unions and the public, WAEC emphasized that the exam is being conducted across member countries and that Nigerian students should not be disadvantaged by missing the exam.
However, the head office of the organization in Lagos clarified that the memo was not intended for public dissemination.
Speaking on behalf of WAEC Nigeria, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina explained that the internal memo sent to school principals was not meant to disrespect or challenge the labor movement regarding its planned nationwide strike.
She emphasized that the examination is being conducted not only in Nigeria but also across three out of the four member countries of the organization, all following the same timetable.
“We just feel that Nigerian candidates should not miss out on the arrangement, and nothing more. And that is why we are making a passionate appeal on their behalf
