As Nigeria marks Children’s Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Rivers State Directorate, has called on government authorities and stakeholders to intensify efforts in providing quality education and skill development opportunities for Nigerian children.

Speaking in commemoration of this year’s Children’s Day, the State Director of NOA, Dr. Edward Banigo, emphasized the theme of the celebration: “Enhancing the Total Well-being of Children Through Quality Education and Skill Development.”

Banigo noted that the theme reflects the pressing need to empower Nigerian children through access to quality education and practical skills necessary for their holistic development and the advancement of the nation.

Dr. Banigo expressed concern over the poor state of educational infrastructure in some parts of Rivers State, particularly in rural communities, where pupils are still being taught in dilapidated classrooms and, in many cases, forced to sit on bare floors due to a lack of basic facilities.

The state director stressed that such conditions hinder effective learning and called for immediate action.

“In line with this, the NOA calls on all tiers of government and relevant stakeholders to prioritise the provision of adequate infrastructure and the creation of a conducive learning environment, particularly in public schools,” Banigo said. “This includes the availability of modern facilities, qualified teachers, textbooks, and other critical teaching and learning materials.”

The NOA also appealed to the Rivers State Government to step up its efforts in improving the conditions of public schools across the state. Creating a supportive and resourceful learning atmosphere, the agency stated, is key to nurturing a generation of educated, skilled, and responsible citizens.

Beyond government efforts, the agency urged teachers, caregivers, and parents to remain dedicated to their roles in shaping the future of Nigerian children. Dr. Banigo highlighted the importance of guidance, protection, and emotional support in raising well-rounded individuals.

“As we celebrate this year’s Children’s Day, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to the growth, education, and empowerment of our children, the true future of our nation,” the state director added.
