Career Day Inspires Students in Asari-Toru LGA

Secondary school students in Asari-Toru Local Government Area recently participated in an inspiring Career Guidance and Mentorship Day, an initiative aimed at broadening their horizons and helping them make informed decisions about their future academic and professional paths.Organized by the State Ministry of Education in collaboration with various professional bodies, the event provided a unique platform for students to interact directly with experts from diverse fields.

Professionals from medicine, engineering, law, technology, entrepreneurship, and creative arts shared their experiences, offering insights into their respective careers and the educational journeys required to pursue them. The interactive sessions included presentations, Q&A segments, and one-on-one mentorship opportunities, allowing students to ask specific questions and gain personalized advice. “It was eye-opening! I never knew there were so many options in tech beyond coding,” exclaimed Ifeanyi Kalu, a SS2 student.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world career demands, ensuring that students are not only academically prepared but also aware of the opportunities available to them. Many students, particularly those in rural areas, have limited exposure to a wide range of professions. “This event gives our students a clearer vision for their future,” commented Mrs. Victoria Uche, a career counselor.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the Commissioner for Education highlighted the importance of early career guidance. “Equipping our young people with knowledge about various career paths is crucial for building a skilled workforce and fostering innovation in Rivers State,” she stated. The interactive nature of the day was particularly well-received, fostering enthusiasm among the attendees.

“I spoke with a lawyer and now I’m even more determined to study law,” shared Precious Amadi, another student. Parents also appreciated the initiative. “It helps them avoid making blind choices. My son is now thinking differently about his JAMB options,” said Mr. Godwin Nna, a parent. The program is part of a wider effort to enhance educational outcomes by providing holistic support, guiding students toward successful and fulfilling careers.
