Davido Vs Wizkid Feud: Who Really Is Afrobeats King?

For over a decade, the Nigerian music scene has been dominated by one of the most polarizing debates: Who is the true king of Afrobeats—Davido or Wizkid? Their fanbases, 30BG (Davido) and Wizkid FC, have practically turned social media into a battlefield, trading insults and comparisons over everything from streaming numbers to sold-out shows. But while the feud rages, one question lingers—who really is the king of afrobeats? Davido, Wizkid, or someone else entirely different.

Wizkid, often hailed as the pioneer of Nigeria’s global crossover, earned his stripes with hits like “Ojuelegba” and his feature on Drake’s One Dance, a song that catapulted Afrobeats into global consciousness. With his calm persona and Grammy-winning album Made in Lagos, Wizkid has often been described as the “face of Afrobeats” to the Western world. His minimalist, mellow sound has helped him dominate international playlists. But critics argue his recent music feels more geared toward a Western audience, drifting from the raw Afrobeat vibe that made him a household name in Nigeria.

Davido, on the other hand, is the high-energy, hit-machine powerhouse. From Dami Duro to Fall and Unavailable, he’s known for consistently churning out club bangers and street anthems that vibe with Africans worldwide. While critics occasionally dismiss his vocal abilities or claim he leans heavily on songwriters, his ability to connect with his core African audience is undeniable. Unlike Wizkid, Davido thrives on visibility—lavish giveaways, constant fan engagement, and a bigger-than-life personality that keeps him at the center of the culture.

But here’s the twist: while fans battle over Davido and Wizkid, Afrobeats is no longer a two-man show. Burna Boy has become a Grammy-winning juggernaut, blending Afrofusion with unapologetic African pride. His Twice as Tall and African Giant albums put him on par with legends, and his live performances are arguably the most electrifying in the industry. Rema is pushing the genre into new sonic territories, blending trap, Afrobeats, and EDM, while Tems has become a global sensation with her sultry voice, even collaborating with Beyoncé and Rihanna.

Then there’s Ayra Starr, who, despite her young age, is already dominating charts and festivals with her unique style, and veterans like D’Banj and P-Square, who laid the groundwork for today’s Afrobeats boom but often get overlooked in this generational clash. Without their early hustle, would Wizkid or Davido even have had a stage to shine on?

The obsession with crowning a single “Afrobeats King” might be holding the genre back. Afrobeats has grown beyond one artist, one sound, or one face. It’s no longer about who’s the biggest in Lagos or who tops Apple Music Nigeria. Today, Afrobeats is a global force with multiple leaders—some kings, some queens, and even experimental “rebels” like Rema who are creating new lanes entirely.

Maybe, just maybe, the true king (or queen) of Afrobeats isn’t a single person at all. Maybe it’s the movement itself—a genre thriving because of the diversity of talents pushing it in every direction. While 30BG and Wizkid FC keep warring online, Burna Boy is filling stadiums, Tems is winning Grammys, Rema is headlining international festivals, and Ayra Starr is shaping the future.

So, Who Holds the Crown?

If we’re talking legacy, Wizkid’s early international reach gives him a case. If we’re talking impact and consistency, Davido’s hit-making prowess can’t be denied. But if we’re being honest, the Afrobeats throne may now be a round table, with no singular king but a council of stars who together represent the genre’s dominance.

Until fans stop fighting and start appreciating the collective, we might never truly see the full power of what Afrobeats has become.
