Government Shuts Markets For Tinubu Visit

The Bayelsa State business community is navigating a total commercial standstill today as the state government enforces a mandatory closure of all markets to welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Announced on Thursday, April 9, 2026, by the State Commissioner for Information, Orientation, and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai.

The directive aims to ensure a seamless “one-day official visit” for the President. The government also declared today, Friday, April 10, 2026, a work-free day, effectively halting formal and informal economic activities across the state to allow residents and civil servants to participate in the high-profile commissioning of four “legacy projects” delivered under Governor Douye Diri’s administration.

The market closure has sparked mixed reactions among Yenagoa’s petty traders and wholesalers, who argue that a full-day shutdown during a peak trading window impacts daily turnover. However, state officials maintain that the short-term economic pause is necessary to launch projects that will drive long-term industrial growth.

Chief among these is a state-owned 60-megawatt gas turbine at Opolo-Elebele, which is expected to revolutionize power supply for Bayelsa State, including the local SMEs. Other projects slated for the presidential “ribbon-cutting” include the 630-metre Angiama-Oporoma Bridge, connecting a region that has lacked road access to the state capital for over 60 years, and a 60-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from Onopa to the LNG axis.

While the immediate closure of markets like Swali and Tombia creates a temporary dip in retail volume, the strategic nature of the new infrastructure could lower long-term operating costs for businesses in Bayelsa.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, noted this morning that the 60MW gas turbine is particularly critical for the state, as it provides the energy backbone required for agro-processing and industrial clusters. “Bayelsa is being repositioned as an investment destination, and these projects are the hardware for that transformation,” Lokpobiri stated in a congratulatory message to the state.

As of 7:30 AM on Friday, security has been tightened across Yenagoa, with a heavy deployment of the Nigeria Police Force and the Civil Defence Corps to ensure compliance with the market closure order. Residents have been urged to turn out in their numbers to accord the President the state’s “famed hospitality.”
