Deputy Gov Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Amayanabo of Opobo

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu says the late Amayanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, was a father figure, a patriot, and a compassionate leader who served his people and humanity with love and dedication.

Prof. Odu made this statement during the valedictory session organised by the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in honour of the late monarch at the Council Auditorium in Port Harcourt on Tuesday 7 April 2026.

Deputy Governor Odu said the news of the king’s death came as a rude shock to her, noting that she had remained hopeful and prayed earnestly for his recovery after rumours of his illness circulated.

She recalled visiting the late monarch at the Intensive Care Unit, where he responded positively during prayers, adding that everyone hoped the improvement would lead to full recovery.

“We hoped it would translate into full recovery, but it pleased God to call him home, and we cannot question God,” Prof. Odu said.

The Deputy Governor disclosed that the late King treated her like his own daughter, a relationship that was well known to those close to the royal family.

She noted that both the monarch and his family showed her and her family immense dignity and consistent support, particularly during trying periods, including the passing of her husband, mother, and elder sister.

Prof. Odu while recalling the late king’s selfless disposition cited a specific instance when the monarch adjusted his tight schedule to grace her daughter’s wedding, describing it as a demonstration of his deep commitment and affection.

Reflecting on one of her final moments with the king at the hospital, she said his wave gave her a sense of hope and peace, a memory she now holds dearly.

She described the late monarch as a devout man who always dedicated time on his birthdays to praise and worship God, a clear testimony of his strong faith.

Prof. Odu commended the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers for organising the valedictory session, stating that such gestures would help preserve the legacy of the late Amayanabo in the hearts of the people.
