33% of Candidates Pass WAEC 2026 Private Exam

The West African Examinations Council has announced the release of results for the 2026 First Series of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates.

WAEC explained that the quick release highlights its ongoing efforts to improve service delivery by embracing technology and streamlining its examination processes.

The examination body also thanked stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that their support contributed to the smooth conduct of the exam.

The West African Examinations Council says 32.72 percent of candidates who sat for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates earned at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.

According to the council, 3,429 out of 10,480 candidates met the requirement in the exam conducted nationwide between January 28 and February 14, 2026.

A breakdown of the successful candidates shows that 1,847 were male, while 1,582 were female, indicating a relatively balanced performance across genders.

WAEC described the result as encouraging, linking the improvement to better preparation by candidates and ongoing efforts to enhance the examination process through technology.

The 2026 outcome marks an increase of 5.76 per cent compared to the 26.96 per cent recorded in 2025. The council also noted a steady rise from 30.95 per cent in 2024, suggesting gradual improvement in performance among private candidates.

It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining credible and fair examinations that meet regional standards, while congratulating successful candidates and urging others to keep working towards better results.

Meanwhile, WAEC disclosed that the results of 75 candidates have been withheld over suspected examination malpractice. It said the cases are under investigation and will be reviewed by the appropriate committee, with final decisions to be communicated to those affected after due process.
