In a move to boost environmental safety and protect communities in flood-prone areas, Rivers State has launched a 2.5km shoreline protection and reclamation project in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.
The state commissioner for works, Prof. Temple Nwofor, during an inspection visit to the project site at Ndoni-Oniukwu-Isiukwu, Ase-Azaga communities in ONELGA, revealed that the construction is being handled by China Harbour Construction Company.
Nwofor also noted that the project is expected to be completed before the end of the year, noting that soil tests and other environmental impact assessment EIA) requirements for the project have been concluded.

The works commissioner, who was accompanied on the visit by engineers and staff of the ministry, stated that he was at the project site as directed by the governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to ascertain the logistics and other measures put in place by the contractor handling the project before the kick-start of construction works at the site.
According to him, “the essence of the project is to protect the community shorelines against unforeseen dangers of flooding that may occur.
“If you don’t protect the area, nobody knows what would happen in the future. Even when the water comes, it could get to the point where it could endanger the environment in the communities.
Nwofor further commended the governor for what he described as his gracious disposition in awarding the project, stating that it will be of maximum benefit to the communities in the area.
