Morocco National Team Captain Rejects AFCON Title, Backs Senegal as True Champions

Achraf Hakimi has taken a bold and unexpected stand against Confederation of African Football’s ruling, rejecting Morocco’s awarded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and insisting that Senegal National Team are the rightful winners.

The Morocco National Team captain made it clear that, despite CAF overturning the final result in Morocco’s favour, he does not recognise the title as legitimate.

“My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I’m officially rejecting it and hope my teammates do same. We had a chance but failed to win,” Hakimi said.

Morocco had lost the final on the pitch, with Senegal securing a hard-fought victory. However, CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled the match forfeited due to Senegal’s walk-off, awarding Morocco a 3–0 win.

Hakimi, however, refused to accept the decision, choosing instead to uphold what he believes is sporting fairness.

“That’s football… Senegal beat us fairly and deserved it. It will be unfair to ruin their joy after the hard work,” he added.

Despite acknowledging CAF’s authority, the Paris Saint-Germain defender maintained his position.

“I respect the CAF decision but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again.”

His stance marks a rare moment in modern football, where a player publicly declines a major title on principle, placing integrity above silverware.

Meanwhile, the Senegalese Football Federation is set to challenge CAF’s ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, ensuring the controversy remains far from over.
