‎Title race heats up as Rivers, Rangers face defining fixtures‎‎

‎The competition for the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League title has taken a significant turn as Matchday 31 approaches, following the completion of Rivers United’s outstanding fixtures which have narrowed the lead at the top.

‎Currently, Rivers United maintains the lead in the standings with 52 points; however, their margin has diminished to just one point over Enugu Rangers, who are in second place with 51 points and have demonstrated remarkable consistency in the latter half of the season, suffering only one defeat in their last 11 matches.

‎What initially appeared to be a secure title pursuit for Rivers United has become increasingly precarious. Finidi George’s team has suffered losses in their last three away matches, and they face another challenging away game in Lafia against fourth-placed Nasarawa United.

‎With Nasarawa accumulating 47 points and vying for continental qualification, this match is poised to be the highlight of the weekend. Rivers narrowly won the first leg 1-0, but their recent away form raises significant concerns.

‎On the other hand, Rangers will be observing the situation closely. Fueled by their impressive form, the Flying Antelopes have a prime opportunity to seize the top position when they take on El Kanemi Warriors in Enugu.

‎Having convincingly triumphed over their opponents in recent home fixtures, Rangers are optimistic about defeating the Borno Army, with whom they previously played to a goalless draw in Maiduguri, and potentially reclaiming the summit.

‎In Ikenne, the defending champions Remo Stars are set to clash with Kwara United in a crucial relegation battle. Both teams find themselves under significant pressure, with Kwara facing the risk of a deeper decline and Remo aware that even a victory may not suffice to extricate them from the relegation zone. This match is a critical six-pointer with substantial ramifications at the bottom of the table.
