Breaker Fault At Omoku Station Plunges Port Harcourt Into Darkness

A significant technical failure at the Omoku Generating Station has left vast sections of Rivers State without electricity, disrupting commercial activities across the state’s industrial hubs. The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) PLC recently issued a critical Power Outage notice yesterday, confirming that a “breaker fault” at the facility has crippled supply to several high-priority feeders.

The outage, which began in the early hours of Thursday, has impacted several strategic business locations, including Greater Port Harcourt, Rukpokwu, and the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Also affected are the NTA and Rumuepirikom 33kv feeders, which serve major residential and commercial clusters.

This infrastructure failure comes at an already trying time for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region, many of whom are already struggling with the rising costs of diesel and petrol for alternative power generation. “We are effectively operating at a loss today,” noted a cold-room operator in Rukpokwu. “Without a steady 33kv supply, our overheads double every hour the grid is down.”

PHED management has assured the public that their specialized maintenance team has been deployed to the Omoku site to rectify the fault. While the company did not provide a specific Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR), they appealed for patience, emphasizing that the technical crew is working to restore power “as soon as possible.”

The Omoku Generating Station is a cornerstone of the state’s independent power strategy, and any disruption at this node typically triggers a domino effect across the distribution network, leading to widespread load-shedding.
