Rivers United Stumble Again as Niger Tornadoes Strike Late to Deepen Title Tension

Rivers United were left frustrated after a narrow 1–0 defeat to Niger Tornadoes, as their title charge suffered another damaging setback in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

After a cagey first half that ended goalless, both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, with the game largely defined by physical battles and cautious play. However, the contest opened up after the break as intensity grew and tactical adjustments came into play.

Rivers United made changes around the hour mark in a bid to find a breakthrough, but the decisive moment swung in favour of the hosts. In the 67th minute, Terdoo Shimagande capitalised on a lapse in concentration to fire Niger Tornadoes ahead, leaving the Pride of Rivers chasing the game.

Despite enjoying spells of possession and pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Rivers United once again lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Their attacking intent failed to translate into meaningful opportunities, as Tornadoes remained disciplined and organised at the back.

The match grew increasingly tense, with bookings disrupting rhythm and late drama adding to the intensity, including a red card in stoppage time that summed up the frustration on display.

For Niger Tornadoes, the victory is a significant boost, particularly against a side battling for the title. For Rivers United, however, the defeat raises serious concerns.

At a crucial stage of the season, dropped points like this could prove costly. What once looked like a firm grip on the top of the table is now beginning to slip, with rivals closing in and pressure mounting.

With the title race tightening, Rivers United must quickly regroup and rediscover their consistency or risk seeing their championship ambitions unravel when it matters most.
