Opobo Monarch Unveils Policy Framework For Ibani Language Reintroduction

In a landmark move to preserve cultural identity and promote sustainable development, the Amanyanabo-elect of Opobo Kingdom, His Majesty, King Charles Mac-Pepple Jaja, has unveiled a comprehensive policy framework aimed at reintroducing the Ibani language into mainstream community life and educational systems.

The initiative, which he described as a “cultural rebirth agenda”, seeks to revive the fading linguistic heritage of the Ibani people by integrating the language into schools, homes, and traditional institutions across Opobo and its adjoining communities.

The Monarch made this known while addressing a gathering of stakeholders, including educators, youth leaders, and cultural custodians in Opobo Town. King Mac- Pepple Jaja stressed that language remains the soul of a people and the bedrock of their identity.

“A people who lose their history, their values, and ultimately their future. This framework is not just about words, it is about who we are”, he declared.

The monarch pointed out that the policy outlines strategic steps to ensure the successful reintroduction of the Ibani language, including: incorporation of Ibani language studies into primary and secondary school curricula, training and retraining of teachers in indigenous language instruction, development of Ibani language textbooks and digital learning resources, community-based language immersion programmes, promotion of Ibani in cultural festivals, media, and local governance.

The monarch called on schools and community leaders, to align with the initiative, noting that collective responsibility is key to its success. “Revival is not the duty of one institution, it is the burden and blessing of an entire people”, he said.

Stakeholders at the event highlighted the importance of early education in preserving indigenous languages, warning that the dominance of foreign languages continues to erode local identity.

An educationist, Dr. Chamberlain Uranta noted that if children do not learn their mother tongue at a young age, they grow disconnected from their roots stressing that the initiative is both timely and necessary”.

“Significantly, the monarch linked the cultural revival effort to be broader development objectives, emphasizing that preserving indigenous knowledge systems contributes to sustainable growth” he noted.

Dr. Uranta maintained that language plays critical role in areas, such as, environmental stewardship, conflict resolution, and community cohesion.

“Development is not only about infrastructure; it is also about identity, values, and continuity. A society grounded in its culture is better positioned for sustainable progress”.

Observers note that many indigenous languages in Nigeria are at risk of extinction, adding that, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much, ” emphasizing that accountability in smaller public expenditures reflects broader governance integrity.

Policy analysts in the LGA noted that the unfolding situation underscores a wider governance challenge, bridging the gap between official narratives and citizens’ lived experiences.

According to a governance expert, Dr. Chris Owujie: “Public trust is fragile. It is strengthened by transparency and weakened by ambiguity. When claims cannot be verified, even genuine efforts risk being perceived as insincere”.

The expert further stressed that youth empowerment initiatives must be embedded within clear frameworks that ensure inclusivity, transparency, and long-term impact.

The Ibani language, once widely spoken across Opobo Kingdom, has experienced a steady decline, particularly among younger generations.

Drawing scripture, the royal father urged the people to embrace the initiative with commitment and unity:

“Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk there- in”- ( Jeremiah 6:6).

He emphasized that cultural preservation is not a backward step, but a forward- looking strategy for identity and resilience.

For the people of Opobo Kingdom, the reintroduction of the Ibani language represents not just a cultural project, but a defining moment in their collective journey. “Remove not the landmark, which thy fathers have set”- ( Proverbs 22: 28).

“Indeed, in reclaiming their language, the Ibani people may well be reclaiming their destiny”, King Charles Mac-Pepple Jaja concluded.

Community leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a bold and visionary step toward restoring pride in Ibani heritage.

A youth leader, Comrade Abraham Jaja expressed optimism that the move is more than language, but a revival of who they are.

“If we embrace it, future generations will thank us he added
