Expert Highlights Importance of Sleep for Optimal Health

A neurologist at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Feyisayo Alabi, has emphasised that sleep is a vital biological process that helps reset the body and maintain optimal physical and mental performance.

Dr. Alabi made this known in an interview while speaking on the theme of this year’s World Sleep Day, “Sleep Well, Live Better.”

According to her, sleep is not merely a period of rest but an active process during which the body responds to internal signals and the brain consolidates information.

She explained that babies typically require about 12 hours of sleep daily, while children and adolescents need around 10 hours. Adults, she said, should aim for between seven and nine hours of sleep to remain healthy and productive.

Dr. Alabi highlighted several health benefits of adequate sleep, including detoxification of the body, improved energy levels, mood stabilisation, and cellular repair.

During sleep, she said, the body slows down significantly, allowing it to conserve and restore energy while also clearing harmful chemicals from the brain and other organs.

The neurologist also described insomnia as the inability to sleep, noting that it can be caused by factors such as anxiety and excessive consumption of caffeine before bedtime. She suggested simple remedies like taking warm milk or a shower before sleep to help improve rest.

Dr. Alabi further warned about the dangers of sleep deprivation, which include fatigue, forgetfulness, mood disturbances, headaches, and increased risk of obesity.

She noted that lack of sleep can also impair concentration and reaction time, posing serious risks for individuals performing sensitive tasks such as driving or handling critical information.

Dr. Alabi advised that sleep should be treated with the same level of importance as proper diet and regular exercise for individuals seeking to maintain good health.
