Rivers Police Target Tinted Commercial Vehicles

As part of measures to enhance public safety and strengthen crime prevention efforts, the Rivers State Police command has announced plans to begin statewide clampdown on vehicles operating without valid registration number plates.

The command said it will also target vehicles with covered or obscured number plates in the operation which would commence Monday, March 16, 2026.

In a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Irinke-Koko, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the police warned that any vehicle found using revolving or flash lights without an official letter of approval from the appropriate authority would be impounded.

The statement assured that, “this enforcement exercise is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations across the state.

“Vehicles without proper identification, as well as those illegally using revolving lights, pose serious security risks and are often linked to criminal activities.

“The command also warns against the use of tinted glasses, on commercial vehicles, as such vehicles are frequently exploited by “one chance” kidnapping syndicates to perpetrate criminal acts.”

The statement further urged the general public to be vigilant and cautious when boarding vehicles with heavily tinted windows, while motorists were advised to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and display clear and visible number plates at all times.

It added that, “unauthorized use of revolving or flash lights by private individuals is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

“Defaulters will have their vehicles impounded and may be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has assured residents that the enforcement exercise will be carried out professionally, fairly, and without bias.

The CP called for cooperation with officers of the State Police command, stressing that the operation was in the interest of public safety and security.

Adepoju further advised the general public to, “ensure their vehicles have valid and clearly visible number plates. Remove any unauthorized revolving or flashing lights from their vehicles immediately. Avoid the use of tinted glasses, especially on commercial vehicles. Carry all relevant vehicle documents while driving. Be vigilant and cautious when boarding commercial vehicles with tinted windows. Report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.”

In reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order across the state, the command made the following emergency contacts available for members of the public; Control Room 0803 200 3514, Complaint Response Unit (CRU) 07057605256, 08120822987, 09035774814, PPRO
