Rivers State Assembly Approves 5 Commissioner Nominees

The Rivers State House of Assembly says five out of nine commissioner nominees nominated by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara met the criteria to be confirmed as members of the State executive council.

Speaking shortly after the screening exercise, Assembly Speaker Mr Martin Amaewhule said the four other nominees rejected by votes from members of the Assembly did not meet the criteria set by the legislators during their screening exercise on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Mr Amaewhule told members of the house present during plenary that a letter will be sent to Governor Fubara, citing why the nominations of Professor Datonye Alasia, Mrs Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, and Otonye TKD Amachree were rejected.

The Speaker also put to a vote a request that the Governor swiftly swear in Mr Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Mr Lekue Kenneth, and Sir Amairigha Edward Hart as members of Rivers State Executive Council.

During the screening exercise, the Lawmakers cited poor performance, tax clearance issues, and petitions as part of the controversies surrounding some of the rejected nominees during the screening session, which lasted over two hours at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.

The nominees faced questions on live National Television about their credentials, vision for their potential portfolios, and other issues raised by members.
