The recent announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria regarding the implementation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven system designed to monitor travellers entering the nation and to identify instances of visa overstays is really appreciated by the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).
According to the report, it is claimed that the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association indicated that this initiative marks a significant advancement in modernising Nigeria’s migration management framework and enhancing the nation’s ability to tackle irregular migration.
The association characterised the introduction of the AI-driven system as a demonstration of the government’s dedication to fortifying Nigeria’s homeland security framework and implementing reforms aimed at improving border governance, internal security coordination, and institutional accountability among agencies.

However, Mr Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, the Director-General of NECA, in response to this development, remarked that “the deployment of AI to assist in immigration monitoring and to track visa overstays is a commendable initiative that embodies a progressive approach to homeland security.
“In a time when migration patterns and cross-border mobility have become increasingly intricate, the utilisation of data-driven systems is crucial for enhancing oversight, bolstering border management, and ensuring adherence to immigration regulations.”
The Director-General of NECA emphasised that the capability of the nation’s security institutions to depend on integrated digital systems that can analyse travel records and detect immigration violations will greatly enhance regulatory enforcement and facilitate more effective migration governance.
He stated: “A contemporary immigration system must be underpinned by dependable data, intelligent monitoring platforms, and effective coordination among pertinent agencies.
“The advent of AI-enabled monitoring tools will augment the capacity of our institutions to identify irregular migration, enforce visa compliance, and safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s borders.”
