120-Year-Old Fisherwoman Honoured With Dolphin Casket

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the burial of a 120-year-old woman in Oboro community, after she was laid to rest in a dolphin-shaped casket.

The burial ceremony, which drew a large crowd of sympathisers, family members and onlookers, also sparked conversations across social media.

Many people were surprised by the sight of the customised casket, while others described it as a beautiful and meaningful way to say goodbye.

The late woman was known throughout her lifetime as a dedicated fisherwoman. Fishing was not just her job but her way of life. For decades, she depended on the river for survival and became a familiar face within the local fishing community. According to residents, she remained connected to the waters for most of her long life, earning respect for her hard work and strength.

Family members and community leaders explained that the dolphin-shaped casket was carefully chosen to reflect her identity. They said the dolphin symbol represents the river and the life she lived.

To them, it was important that her burial told the story of who she was and what she stood for. Rather than using a regular casket, they wanted something that would clearly show her lifelong dedication to fishing.

The ceremony itself was said to be emotional but also celebratory. Songs, prayers and cultural rites were performed as loved ones paid their final respects.

One thing remains clear: the fisherwoman’s final journey was designed to reflect the life she lived. In death, just as in life, the river remained at the centre of her story.
