FAAN Workers Issue 72-Hour Ultimatum at Airport

Workers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Port Harcourt International Airport have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to airport management to rescind its decision to concession toll gates and parking facilities to private firms.

The ultimatum given on Thursday 26 February, 2026, was handed down by the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN).

Speaking to journalists, NUATE Chairman, Comrade Felix Ohwoefe, said the unions would take “drastic actions” if management fails to reverse the concession of what he described as major revenue points at the airport.

Ohwoefe alleged that the unions were not consulted and that due process was not followed before the decision was taken. He warned that failure to rescind the concession could lead to workers barricading all entrance and access points to the airport.

He further expressed concern that the concession could result in mass layoffs, especially amid prevailing economic challenges.

The union leader also questioned the financial terms of the concession, alleging that the automated revenue points currently generate over ₦28 million monthly for FAAN, while the proposed concession agreement reportedly requires the private firm to remit only ₦14 million monthly.

“We are not against concessioning the automated points, but due process must be followed. If government is concessioning the facility, we want to know what will happen to our workers,” Ohwoefe said.

He described the terms as unfavourable and alleged possible foul play in the arrangement, insisting that any concessionaire must remit more than the current revenue being generated.

The unions called on the Minister of Aviation and the President to intervene in the matter.

When contacted, FAAN’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Ngozi V. Onyeanwuna-Nwosu, said she had not received approval from management to comment on the issue.
