Obio/Akpor LG Chair Pledges Support As IAUE Marks 2026 World Home Economics Day

In preparation for this year’s World Home Economics Day, the Department of Home Economics of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, has paid a courtesy visit to the chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Gift Worlu.

The visit on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, was aimed at intimating the chairman on preparation ahead of the global celebration and to seek support and partnership.

In his address, professor Reginah Nchelem Azunwene, who led the delegation revealed that the event commemorated annually has been scheduled to hold March 21, 2026.

According to Azunwene, “World Home Economics Day is a global celebration observed annually on March 21 to highlight the relevance of Home Economics in everyday life.

“For this year’s theme, We Are What We Eat. Many of the diseases prevalent today are nutrition-based. Promoting healthier food choices, including alternative protein sources such as rabbit meat can help improve public health outcomes.”

The IAUE Professor further noted that the “visit was also aimed at identifying with the host local government and fostering stronger collaboration between the institution and the council in advancing community development initiatives.”

On his part, the OBALGA council boss commended the department for what he described as its commitment to promoting home management, nutrition and family well being across communities.

Worlu who was represented by his vice, Dr. Joyce Nyeche, said, “Home Economics remains a critical discipline in shaping responsible homes and healthy societies.

“I studied Home Economics during my National Certificate in Education NCE, programme and had taught the subject from JSS 1 to JSS 3.”

Further, she assured the delegation that their message and support would be communicated to the chairman, even as she reaffirmed the council’s commitment to initiatives that impacts positively on residents of the LGA
