Bayelsa Education Commissioner Receives Leadership Award

Satisfied with his dedication to the education sector, the Faculty of Science, Niger Delta University NDU, has conferred Service and Leadership Award on the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah.

The prestigious award from the state-owned institution was given during the Faculty’s 2nd Biennial International Conference held on Monday, February 23, 2026.

The theme of the event which was held at the ASUU Secretariat Complex of the University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, was “Scientific Research Beyond the Classroom and Laboratory: Key to Personal Development and Societal Relevance.”

The aim of the programme was centered on translating research outputs into practical solutions capable of driving sustainable development.

Speaking at the event, Emelah who gave an acceptance speech noted that, “this award is a call to greater service and I will like to pledge my continued commitment to advancing science-driven policies that will strengthen educational management.

The commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Okene Simon-peter, further assured that he would remain committed to stimulate economic growth in the state.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Allen A. Agih, reiterated the institution’s commitment to impactful research that responds to societal needs.

Agih emphasised the need for scientific inquiry to move beyond the classroom into innovation, entrepreneurship, and policy engagement.

The conference continued with technical sessions designed to deepen the nexus between science and governance—an objective closely aligned with the Ministry’s vision of translating research into measurable education development outcomes in the state.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Education Development Trust Fund EDTF, Prof. Ebimieowei Etebu, was also honoured at the event, where he assured that EDTF would position the education sector.
