‎Telecoms Operators Highlight Key Structural Challenges in Nigeria

Telecommunications operators, who are part of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have identified issues hindering them from doing their job well in the country. They called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to help fix these problems so they can give service to the people.

‎The operators intend to collaborate with Dr Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, Chairman of the NCC Board to ensure their services are good and promote internet connectivity. Also, the operators intend providing internet access for research and learning purposes.


‎The operators led by the Chairman of ALTON Gbenga Adebayo made this promise during a visit to the NCC Chairman in Lagos.

‎During the meeting Adebayo raised certain issues they encountered, fibre cable cutting by government contractors, new rules and high cost of tax. Also limiting services across the country, damaging important digital equipment and losing assets without replacement. It also affects sectors like banking, education and security.

‎He suggested that the need for creating a plan to map out the fibre cables before construction starts and have a system to work together to prevent these problems from happening.

‎The NCC chairman, Olorunnimbe was happy to meet with the telecom operators. He asked them to invest more in the industry help educational websites and fix the problem of people running out of data on their phones. He applauded the telecom operators for the services they provide while urging them to do more to help people.
