Rivers Egi Monarch Summons DPO Over Alleged Police Extortion

The traditional ruler of Egi Kingdom in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, HRM Eze Victor Egbo Elenwa, has summoned the Divisional Police Officer of the area, CSP Appah A. Timmy, following growing allegations of police extortion and harassment of residents.

The monarch, through the Chairman of the Egi Council of Chiefs, Eze Dr. Sylvanus E. Ojum, expressed deep concern over complaints from members of the community. According to him, several youths and residents have reported cases where security operatives allegedly extort money at checkpoints and intimidate innocent people.

He said the reports suggest that some officers plant illegal substances on young people and then demand large sums of money to secure their release. The alleged bribes, he noted, range from ₦200,000 to ₦300,000, creating fear and mistrust between the police and the community.

The council warned that such actions, if proven true, could damage the relationship between law enforcement and the public, especially at a time when cooperation is needed to tackle insecurity and crime in the region.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Council, Chief George Nwaerema, raised concerns about how minor misunderstandings are sometimes turned into serious criminal matters. He urged the DPO to thoroughly review the conduct of officers under his command and ensure professionalism in their operations.

According to him, while the community appreciates the role of the police in maintaining law and order, it expects fairness, transparency, and respect for human rights.

In his response, CSP Timmy denied the allegations of extortion and harassment. He explained that recent police operations in the area were focused on tackling illegal drug activities and criminal networks threatening peace in Egi and surrounding communities.

He, however, assured the monarch and the people that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action. The DPO encouraged residents to report any verified case of extortion or abuse directly to his office, promising swift and decisive action.
