Nigerians Hold Their Hearts In Their Hands As FIFA Nears Verdict

Anxiety may be rising among fans, but the Nigeria Football Federation has made one thing clear: there is no decision yet from FIFA regarding Nigeria’s protest against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The controversy stems from Nigeria’s dramatic elimination by DR Congo national football team in a penalty shootout during the African zone World Cup play-offs last November. That defeat ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of advancing to the intercontinental play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the loss, the NFF submitted a formal complaint to FIFA, questioning the eligibility of certain Congolese players who allegedly switched national allegiance. The federation’s argument reportedly referenced Congolese nationality laws, which do not recognize dual citizenship, raising concerns that some players representing the Leopards may have held European passports.

However, amid widespread speculation that FIFA had already reached a verdict, the NFF has firmly denied such reports.

Ademola Olajire, the federation’s Director of Communications, described claims of a ruling in favour of either Nigeria or DR Congo as false.

“There is no decision from FIFA at this time. Any claims that a ruling has been made are false. FIFA has not communicated any verdict to the NFF or the Congolese federation,” Olajire stated.

The clarification brings a temporary pause to the rumour mill but does little to ease the tension surrounding the case. With qualification for the 2026 World Cup hanging in the balance, every development carries enormous weight.

For now, the matter remains under FIFA’s review. Until an official communication is issued, Nigeria’s World Cup fate remains uncertain, suspended between legal argument and sporting finality.
