Rivers United F.C. may have endured a painful campaign on the pitch, but financially, the story tells a different tale. Nigeria’s sole representative in the 2025 2026 CAF Champions League group stage earned approximately N1 billion despite finishing bottom of Group A.
The Pride of Rivers wrapped up their campaign with an away defeat to RS Berkane, a result that confirmed an elimination that had already been sealed. It was a sobering end to what ranks among the club’s most disappointing continental outings.
Across six group matches, Rivers United managed just one point, recording five defeats and a solitary draw. They also lost all their home fixtures in Uyo, a statistic that underscores the scale of their struggles. In simple terms, Rivers United crashed out early but still returned home as billion naira earners.

While the financial reward offers some consolation, the sporting implications remain concerning. Nigeria retains its 12th position in the CAF rankings, the final slot that guarantees four representatives in the 2026 2027 CAF club competitions. However, repeated early exits threaten that standing in the long term.
Nigeria’s other entrant, Remo Stars F.C., exited in the preliminary stage after a 7 to 1 aggregate defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns. Their participation earned 50,000 dollars, equivalent to N67,678,661.
