Nigerian singer Tems has once again etched her name into global music history, becoming the first African female artist to record seven entries on the Billboard Hot 100. The milestone further cements her status as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports and a defining voice of this generation.
The latest achievement comes as her new song What You Need debuted on the prestigious U.S. chart, pushing her total Hot 100 appearances to seven. In an industry where breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 is already a major feat, maintaining repeated entries is an even bigger statement of consistency, relevance, and global appeal.
Tems’ Billboard journey has been shaped by a blend of powerful solo records and high-profile collaborations. Her international breakthrough began with Essence, Wizkid’s global hit that introduced her soulful sound to a wider audience.

She later made history with Wait For U alongside Future and Drake, a song that debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first African artist to achieve that rare feat. Other charting appearances include her solo fan-favourite Free Mind, as well as collaborations with global heavyweights like Drake, Beyoncé, and UK rapper Dave.
With this record, Tems now stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the most successful African artists to ever cross into the U.S. mainstream, tying with Burna Boy for the highest number of Billboard Hot 100 entries by a Nigerian artist.
For a female African act, however, this moment is particularly significant, as it opens new doors and resets expectations for women from the continent aiming for global recognition.
