The head coach of Rivers United, Finidi George has signaled the club management board, calling for urgent reinforcements after his side’s CAF Champions League campaign ended in disappointment, admitting his players were exposed by the demands of continental football following another damaging defeat in Group A.
Rivers United’s recent fall-off came in a 4–1 home defeat to defending champions Pyramids of Egypt, a result that confirmed their elimination before the final round of fixtures.
Despite Rivers United’s continental failure, the pride of Rivers remain one of the favorite for the current campaign, standing as a joint top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table with 41 points, and four games in hand and are in contention to return to the Champions League next season. Finidi George said; “Let us see how we can compete in the NPFL. If we win it, we will have time to prepare and to bring in a couple of players to strengthen the team. We have seen our lapses and we know we can do better next time.”
“Again, it is indeed a learning process for the players. Now they have seen a different level of football. To match a team like this, we definitely have to step up and bring in a couple of players.”
The former Super Eagles player, Finidi also rejected suggestions that the Port Harcourt based side were unlucky, insisting the better side prevailed over ninety minutes.
As it stands, Finidi George’s men, early exit leaves the nation of Nigeria without a club in the knockout stages of the Champions League or Confederation Cup this season, which further underlines the growing gap between domestic success and continental competitiveness.
