Medical Expert Links Constipation to Poor Diet, Drug Use

A medical expert has advised Nigerians to get evaluated when they observe symptoms of constipation. Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the Medical Director of Alpha One Health Care Solutions, Dr. Paul Edugbo who described constipation as the inability to pass out stool at least three times in a week, with difficulty in passing feces, and hard, or lumpy stool.

He explained that not stooling for days does not necessarily mean that the individual is constipated, but if he finds it difficult to defecate, less than thrice a week.

Dr. Edugbo enumerated one of the causative factors of constipation as less intake of water. “There are various things that can lead to constipation. One of the most important things is the diet that the person eats.


Another cause of constipation is some common drugs, yes, some medication we take like Ibrufen, tramadol,codein these are some over the counter medication that can lead to constipation eventually”, he concluded.

Dr. Edugbo noted that the intake of adequate water would go a long way to make defecation easy. “Fiber-rich food, something like Ofada rice, amala, oatmeal, beans, etc. Exercise also plays a role; it really helps.


When you exercise, it helps your abdominal and intestinal muscles; simply walking for ten minutes can be very helpful”, he stated.

He urged the members of the public to always seek medical attention when the symptoms of constipation are noticed, instead of relying on self-medication which can be dangerous to health.
