Tai Legislative Assembly Passes Bill for Skill Acquisition Centre in First Sitting of 2026

The Tai Local Government Legislative Assembly in Rivers State on Tuesday 20 January 2026 held its first plenary session of the year, marking a significant step in legislative activities with the passage of a key bill at its first reading.

In a Statement by the Tai Legislative Assembly Media Directorate, members of the 9th Tai Legislative Assembly were urged by the House Leader Hon. Raphael Nsorne Don to strictly adhere to the standing orders of the chamber to ensure that bye-laws enacted by the house command respect beyond its walls.

The leader further charged his colleagues and members of all standing committees to uphold high professional standards in discharging their duties as assigned by the assembly.

In line with its core functions of law-making, oversight and representation of constituents’ interests, the house deliberated on and passed a bill seeking the establishment of a Tai Local Government Skill Acquisition Centre.

Titled “A Bill for a Bye-Law to Establish a Skill Acquisition Centre in Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria,” the proposed legislation aims to promote vocational training, entrepreneurship development and economic empowerment for residents of the area.

Presenting the bill, Hon. Nuka Prince Ndorne, who sponsored it, highlighted its key objectives and functions to include offering training programmes in Agriculture and agro-processing, Information Technology (IT) and digital skills amongst others.

The bill also mandates collaboration with local industries and organisations to facilitate internships and job placements for trainees.

Describing the bill as timely and impactful, Hon. Ndorne stressed its potential to transform the lives of youths and other residents by equipping them with marketable skills amid economic challenges.

After thorough deliberations, members of the house unanimously voted in favour of the bill, passing it at the first hearing stage for further legislative processes.

According to the statement, the development is a proactive move by the Tai Legislative Assembly to address unemployment and skill gaps in the local government area, which is part of the oil-rich Rivers State.
