Nigerian Army Reaffirms Commitment to Families of Fallen Heroes and Serving Officers

On the occasion of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of both serving personnel and the families of fallen heroes.

Major General Emmanuel Eric-Emekah, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, made this pledge during a media chat on Wednesday, January 15. He described the day as a “sacrosanct and emotional obligation” to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity.

A Comprehensive Framework for Welfare

The GOC noted that the way a nation treats its fallen heroes sends a powerful message to those currently in uniform. By standing by the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Army reaffirms to its serving officers that their service and sacrifices are valued.

“Consistent remembrance and inclusion of these widows in national events send a powerful message that the nation cares for them,” Major General Eric-Emekah stated. He added that this support reinforces the Army’s core values of selfless service, loyalty, and discipline.

A Solemn Reminder of National Peace

Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day serves as a reminder that the peace and freedom enjoyed by Nigerians come at a great cost—paid through the blood and sweat of gallant soldiers.

The GOC enjoined currently serving men and women to remain dedicated to their duties, assuring them that their professionalism and courage are the bedrock of the nation’s security. Furthermore, he encouraged the younger generation to recognize their responsibility in supporting the Armed Forces, as they bear the burden of national defense on behalf of all citizens.
