Rivers Traditional Rulers Form High-Powered Committee to Broker Peace in Lingering Political Crisis

In a significant move to restore calm and unity amid the ongoing political tensions gripping Rivers State, the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has constituted a nine-member mediation committee tasked with engaging key stakeholders and delivering lasting solutions.

The committee is chaired by His Majesty (Dr.) Suanu T. Y. Baridam, a respected monarch known for his wisdom and advocacy for peace, with His Majesty Eze Barr. Nwachukwu Nnam Obi serving as co-chairman. This high-level panel brings together prominent traditional leaders, including His Majesty Eze Uchechukwu Isaiah-Elikwu, His Majesty Eze Leslie Eke, His Majesty Dr. Samuel Amaechi, His Majesty Dr. Felix Otuwarikpo, His Majesty Eze Barr. Onyekachi Amaonwu, HRH King Agolia Aboko, and HRH Eze Nwankwo Nwankwo. Barr. Darlington Owiriwa will serve as secretary.

The initiative comes at a critical time as Rivers State continues to navigate deep-seated political divisions that have threatened governance, stability, and development in the oil-rich region. The committee is expected to interface broadly with political actors, community leaders, and other influential figures to foster dialogue, de-escalate tensions, and pave the way for enduring reconciliation.

Given the sensitive nature of the issues at stake, the Council has appealed to supporters of all parties, social media users, and the general public to exercise restraint in their statements and actions. Citizens are strongly urged to avoid any conduct that could provoke unrest or breach the peace, allowing the mediation process to proceed effectively.

The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, under the leadership of its Chairman, His Majesty Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, DSSRS, JP (Eze Oha Apara IV, Apara Kingdom), reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the state’s harmony and progress. The council stands as a unifying force, drawing on the revered authority of traditional institutions to guide Rivers State toward a peaceful and prosperous future.
