NOA, EPA Warn Nigerians of Health Risks as Air Pollution Worsens

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), working alongside the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has issued a public health advisory urging Nigerians to take extra precautions amid the prevailing dusty atmosphere across parts of the country.

The agencies clarified that the current condition is not the regular harmattan season but an intense episode of air pollution capable of posing serious health risks. According to the advisory, prolonged exposure to the dust could reduce lung function and trigger respiratory infections, inflammation and oxidative stress, which may disrupt the body’s normal balance.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the NOA advised Nigerians to adopt preventive measures to minimise health complications. These include wearing nose masks, drinking plenty of water, keeping food and drinking water properly covered, and washing fruits thoroughly before consumption. The agency also encouraged people to remain indoors as much as possible and to limit exposure to the sun, particularly during hot afternoons.

Special guidance was issued for vulnerable groups, especially the elderly. The statement recommended the use of shea butter (locally known as ori) on the body and hair, particularly before bedtime, as well as drinking warm water regularly.

It further advised against eating cold meals early in the morning and cautioned against the use of air conditioners or fans at night to prevent cold-related illnesses. Residents were also urged to keep their chests warm until midday and to consistently wear nose masks when using motorcycles or public transportation.

The agencies noted that the dusty condition may persist for some time and appealed to Nigerians to remain vigilant and prioritise their health. They also called on the public to share the advisory widely to ensure collective awareness and protection.

The NOA and EPA reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and urged citizens to take the warning seriously as part of efforts to reduce health risks during the period.
