Rivers Assembly Insists Impeachment Process Against Fubara, Deputy on Track

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, on Thursday, January 8, 2026, are progressing strictly in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Dr. Enemi Alabo George on Friday January 9, 2026, the Assembly disclosed that the two notices of allegations of gross misconduct have been duly forwarded to the governor and his deputy by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule.

The lawmaker emphasized that the House remains constitutionally empowered to protect the interests of the people by checking any infractions by the executive.

“It is the House of Assembly that is empowered by the Constitution to stand by the people and stop infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any other officer of the Rivers State Government,” George stated.

The statement dismissed widespread reports and social media claims suggesting that the process has been halted or discontinued.

It accused certain individuals and media platforms of spreading false narratives aimed at misleading the public and sowing disaffection between the legislature and well-meaning Nigerians.

“With the leave of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule DSSRS, I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed,” George declared.

He stressed the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to its constitutional duties, vowing not to be deterred by “cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our country’s nascent democracy.”

The latest move marks yet another chapter in the protracted political crisis in Rivers State, which has seen repeated impeachment attempts against the governor amid lingering tensions with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Assembly expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, while extending regards to stakeholders, leaders across levels, and all democrats committed to the Nigerian project.

The development comes as the state grapples with ongoing debates over governance, budgetary processes, and legislative autonomy following periods of emergency rule and political realignments.
