Ex BBN Winner Warns People Against Next Audition

Since its explosive debut in 2006, the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) franchise has been a dominant force in shaping Nigeria’s pop culture and celebrity landscape.

Among the stars it has launched is Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, who clinched the coveted winner’s title during the “Level Up” season in 2022. Her victory, celebrated with a grand prize worth millions, cemented her status as a household name and paved her way into a thriving career as a media personality and host.

However, in a recent reflection, the former winner has offered a tempered perspective on the platform that made her famous. Phyna has publicly stated that while she would still advise aspiring stars to audition for the reality TV show, she does so with significant caveats about its evolving nature.

The media personality argues that the show has substantially “lost its credibility” compared to its earlier editions. She further contends that many contestants now struggle to build a durable fan base after the season concludes. Phyna acknowledges that BBNaija undeniably creates instant fame but observes a sharp decline in that popularity once housemates re-enter the real world.

“The steeze housemates do have on the show they don’t have it again, because it’s the same fan base that move from one to another, no new people, nothing new.

“It’s just the same people. And that aside, the show has lost credibility compared to the way it was before, because when you tell someone now that I came out of BBNaija, they won’t rate you like they do then,” she said.

Phyna’s comments point to a perceived saturation in the market, where the audience loyalty is divided among a rapidly growing alumni, and the cultural currency of simply being a former housemate has diminished.
