Rivers Peace Initiative Calls for De-escalation Amid Fresh Impeachment Move Against Fubara, Deputy

The Rivers Peace Initiative, RPI, has called for immediate de-escalation and dialogue in Rivers State following the House of Assembly’s initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

In a statement on Thursday 8 January by the Convener of the group, Mr. Obinna Ebogidi, the development is a “serious escalation” in the state’s lingering political crisis, which threatens the fragile peace restored in recent months.

“Barely days into the new year, Rivers State is confronted with political signals that require sober reflection and collective restraint,” the statement read.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, on thursday served notices of impeachment on the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct, including breach of a presidential peace agreement.

Following the move, The Rivers Peace Initiative, expressed concern over rising tensions marked by public recriminations and hardened positions.

“Our concern is not about personalities or political advantage, but the cost to governance, development, and public confidence,” it said, noting that ordinary citizens bear the brunt through stalled projects and uncertainty.

Emphasising that impeachment is a grave constitutional tool, the group cautioned against its use as a “tool of pressure or political strategy” in a charged atmosphere.

It called for the involvement of respected elders, faith leaders, and neutral mediators to rebuild trust between the executive and legislature.

“Differences can be managed without humiliation. Disagreements can be resolved without destabilising the state,” the statement added.

The RPI stressed that Rivers deserves leadership prioritising governance over rivalry and stability over supremacy. “Peace must not only be declared. It must be deliberately protected.”
