Anthony Joshua Tragedy: Will He Really Quit Boxing?

Anthony Joshua — the two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and one of the sport’s most compelling figures — has found himself at a deeply emotional crossroads following a devastating car accident in Nigeria that has shook the boxing world and raised tough questions about his future in the ring.

Late on December 29, 2025, Joshua was involved in a serious road collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while visiting family and friends in Nigeria. The SUV he was traveling in crashed into a stationary truck, resulting in the death of two of his closest companions — his strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Joshua himself was injured and hospitalized.

Authorities confirmed that after clinical treatment he was discharged from the hospital as “clinically fit” to recuperate at home, and he paid tribute to his fallen friends with heartfelt public posts.

The accident has also drawn attention to traffic safety in Nigeria, and the driver of the vehicle has been charged with dangerous driving by police.

Joshua’s first public message since the crash, shared on social media with a photo of him and the mothers of the deceased, captioned, “My brother’s keeper.”

Fans, boxing peers, and rivals alike have expressed support and condolences. Even Tyson Fury, the British heavyweight and long-rumored future opponent, offered empathy amidst his own comeback talks.

In Sagamu — Joshua’s ancestral hometown — residents and supporters have personally reached out, urging him to stay grounded and not abandon his roots amid the tragedy.

Will He Really Quit Boxing?

In the days following the crash, speculation about Joshua’s future in boxing has grown, especially after statements from his uncle and close family sources suggesting that he has privately told relatives he intends to step away from the sport. According to those close to him, the emotional toll of the accident — on top of years of career pressure — has led Joshua to seriously consider retirement.

The reports indicate that Joshua communicated his decision to his family and is focused on supporting the families of his two late friends. Some outlets even quoted his uncle saying Joshua has already “retired from boxing.”

However, official confirmation from Joshua or his promoters has not been announced publicly. Matchroom Boxing — his long-time promoters — have not issued a statement on retirement, and discussions about a potential future fight (including the much-anticipated date with Tyson Fury) are still being referenced in media coverage.

Legacy and Next Steps

At 36 years old, and having already reclaimed momentum with a recent high-profile win against Jake Paul just weeks before the crash, Joshua’s legacy as one of boxing’s modern greats is secure — but the tragedy has undeniably shifted his priorities.
