Rivers Reloaded: Fubara, APC and the Battle for Political Control

Rivers State — once again, the oil-rich battleground of Nigerian politics is erupting with fresh drama. At the heart of the storm is Siminalayi Fubara, the sitting governor whose defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in late 2025 was meant to resolve political tension — but instead unveiled deeper battles over leadership, influence, and the future of governance in the state.

A Strategic Shift — or a Political Gamble?

Governor Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC was bold, swift and controversial. The governor publicly aligned himself with the ruling party, arguing that joining the APC would bring stability and accelerate development for Rivers State. It was, in his view, a partnership with the centre of political power in Abuja and a nod to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Even after Fubara’s formal induction into the APC, Wike has remained a dominant, defiant force. In a series of public statements, the FCT minister has dismissed claims that Fubara’s defection automatically makes him the state party’s leader, insisting that real power lies in grassroots structures — not just party cards.

He’s warned senior APC figures — including the party’s national secretary — to “steer clear of Rivers politics,” asserting that outside interference will not be tolerated.

Fresh political hostilities have flared between associates of Wike and Fubara over budget matters and control of the Rivers Assembly — a reminder that the rift runs deep and has real governance implications.

Despite the internal squabbles, the APC’s national leadership has publicly thrown its weight behind Fubara. Party chairman Nentawe Yilwatda officially declared Fubara as the leader of the APC in Rivers State, stressing the governor’s primacy in coordinating party affairs — but also emphasizing the need for cooperation and inclusion.

Yet the support is not unqualified. Some party members warn that Fubara must pursue genuine reconciliation with party structures — or risk severe consequences, including the threat of impeachment by his own party insiders.

Political Tension Meets Governance Realities

The intrigue is not confined to speeches and social media volleys. Rivers’ political machinery is visibly strained.

Budget presentations, legislative cooperation, and executive-legislative relations have all become points of friction. These flashpoints risk undermining governance and could have tangible effects on service delivery and fiscal planning in the state.

For many Rivers citizens, the political theatre raises pressing questions: Can the state government function effectively amid such rivalry? And what does it mean for the people who rely on consistent governance and development?

The stakes are highest when viewed through the lens of the 2027 elections. For Fubara, solidifying control of the APC in Rivers isn’t just about legitimacy within the party — it’s about positioning himself as a kingmaker in Nigeria’s geopolitics. For Wike, the struggle represents a much larger fight for political relevance and control of a key southern stronghold.
