Addressing Godfatherism In Nigeria

There are various definitions of godfatherism. Wiktionary defines it as a form of political corruption in which an influential individual handpicks another, often less influential candidate, to attain leadership to exert authority or influence. On the other hand, Oxford Dictionary of African Politics describes Godfatherism as a term used primarily in Nigeria to refer to wealthy and powerful figures who exert political influence behind the scenes while often remaining out of the limelight.

Godfatherism, in Nigeria emerged prominently in the fourth republic as a means for politicians to secure power and influence. Typically, classic ‘godfathers’ would have earned their wealth through government contracts or access to the country’s oil wealth, then use their largesse to establish a network through which they can influence political developments. A successful godfather, for example, will be able to shape not only who is nominated to contest elections but also who wins.

Sadly, political gladiators in the country have made it part of the political process and brainwashed followers to believe that loyalty in politics can only thrive through godfatherism. From the above assertion, it is clear that godfatherism is a concept that should be abolished from the Nigerian political system as it has caused more harm than good . In the first instance, godfatherism erodes the principles of democracy because elected officers would prioritize loyalty to their godfather over serving the people. By doing so, it hinders effective governance, economic growth and development. God f

atherism can lead to violence, intimidation and electoral malpractices , undermining peace and stability. It is unfortunate that Nigerians cry out for an end to political godfatherism yet when an individual rises to challenge the system, he or she is victimized and regarded as disloyal and ungrateful. Some go to the extent of calling on political ‘sons or daughter’ to stick to whatever conditions that were agreed upon before attaining a particular political position. Suffice to say that such conditions are never made public.

Without mincing words, godfatherism does not only limit the abilities of the political son or daughter, it also hinders dividends of democracy to the people as most conditions given to attain a particular position are only meant to feed the greed of the godfathers. Nigerians must begin to see the ills of godfatherism to the political system and reject it in its entirety. A saner society and better economy can only be achieved when the people are allowed to elect their leaders without such influence from self-acclaimed godfathers.

Nigerians must go all out to support individuals whose candidacy is not under oath, so that they can be held accountable after assuming office, as political sons or daughters only carry out the bidding of their political sponsors. To this end , there is the need for institutional reforms which would ensure accountability and transparency. Electoral reforms are also important to guarantee free, fair and credible elections.

Holding leaders accountable for their actions is also important to drastically reduce or put to an end godfatherism. Furthermore, civic engagement where citizens are encouraged to participate in the electoral process should be enhanced. Addressing godfatherism in the country, will ensure democratic stability and accountability; foster economic growth and development as well as enhance security.
