The Battle Of The Eagles; Nigeria V Tunisia

The super eagles of Nigeria will have to bring out their firing canons when they take on a disciplined Tunisia side in Saturday’s crucial encounter in Fez.

Tunisia head into the match full of confidence and experience. Already qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the North Africans reinforced their credentials by comfortably defeating Uganda to move top of the group on Tuesday.

Although Nigeria edged past Tanzania to secure second place in Group C, their performance was marked by wastefulness in front of goal. Several clear chances went begging, and star forward Victor Osimhen struggled to leave his mark on the contest.

For the three-time AFCON champions to stand a realistic chance against Tunisia, they will need Osimhen to rediscover the lethal form that has established him as one of Africa’s most feared strikers.

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday. Defender Semi Ajayi broke the deadlock with a first-half header, before Ademola Lookman doubled the lead after the break.

Despite taking maximum points, the Super Eagles failed to capitalise on numerous scoring opportunities, allowing Tanzania to remain in the contest longer than expected — a dangerous habit in tournament football.

Tunisia also began their campaign on a positive note, cruising to a 3–1 win over Uganda in Rabat.

Ellyes Skhiri scored early with a header, while Elias Achouri struck twice, once in each half, to seal a convincing victory. The result already surpassed Tunisia’s two-point return from AFCON 2023, where they exited at the group stage.

Nigeria’s key players

While Osimhen remains Nigeria’s biggest name, he endured a quiet outing against Tanzania, squandering a number of chances.

Samuel Chukwueze was heavily involved on the right flank, Alex Iwobi impressed on the left by creating the most opportunities, and Lookman posed a consistent attacking threat, capping his display with a goal.

Achouri is Tunisia’s main attacking threat, having netted twice against Uganda. Skhiri adds goals and control from midfield, while young playmaker Hannibal Mejbri stood out as the team’s chief creator.
