Rivers State Government has played host to the 2nd Bi-Annual Meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) in Port Harcourt, with the theme “Harnessing the Power of Statistics for Nigeria’s Sustainable Development and Economic Transformation.”
Governor Siminalayi Fubara who declared the meeting open was represented by the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyingi Brown. The representative highlighted the state’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote evidence-based planning and economic growth through reliable data.
The high-level gathering convened stakeholders from the National Statistical System, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), federal ministries, state statistical agencies, and development partners. The objective was to bolster coordination, collaboration, and the strategic application of statistics in national development and policy-making.
Key discussions revolved around the implementation of the recently launched Power of Data High Impact Initiative – a UN-supported programme to strengthen national data systems – and the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) 2024–2028, the latest roadmap for modernising statistical production in Nigeria.
Participants also reviewed progress in sustaining the State Gross Domestic Product (GDP) computation exercise, now covering all 36 states, to deliver precise sub-national economic metrics essential for targeted interventions.
The NBS emphasised that platforms like the NCCS are pivotal in fostering a coordinated, inclusive, and technology-driven statistical framework. This, it noted, is crucial for advancing evidence-based governance, sustainable development, and Nigeria’s broader economic transformation goals.
The meeting reinforced the critical role of quality data in tackling national challenges and driving inclusive progress.
