Rivers United Targets NPFL Top Spot

‎The Nigeria Premier Football League title contenders Rivers United and Ikorodu City could move to the top of the league table on today— Monday as they take to the pitch in their next fixtures.

‎In NPFL Matchday 17, the fixture has it that the Rivers United host Wikki Tourists at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, while korodu City will welcome Katsina United to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

‎Unfortunately for Nasarawa United, the League leaders, who missed a great chance to secure maximum points on Sunday after being held to a draw by Plateau United at the New Jos Stadium.

‎The slide mistake made the north side Nasarawa United left them still on top of the table but with just 31 points from 17 matches, while Rivers United sit just behind on 30 points from 15 games and Ikorodu City have 28 points from 16 matches.

‎That notwithstanding, a victory for the pride of Rivers would definitely see them move to the summit of the standings, two points clear of Nasarawa United. And also, a draw, however, would leave them level on points with the leaders. Ikorodu City, on the other hand, could reclaim the top spot if Rivers United fail to secure all three points against Wikki Tourists.

‎Other Matchday 17 fixtures results played on Sunday are as follows; Niger Tornadoes recorded the biggest win of the day with a convincing 3-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors. Kwara United also defeated Enyimba 3-1, Bayelsa United came from behind to beat defending champions Remo Stars 2-1, while Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars played out a goalless draw in Ozoro.

‎In Kano, Shooting Stars also secured a narrow 1-0 away win over Barau FC, and Abia Warriors also claimed a 1-0 victory on the road against Kun Khalifat.

‎With Rivers United, Abia Warriors, Nasarawa United, and Ikorodu City all occupying the top four positions, separated by just four points, the title race remains finely poised. At the other end of the table, El Kanemi Warriors, Kun Khalifat, Barau FC and Kano Pillars currently occupy the relegation places.
