As Nigeria marks the International Day of Human Rights, the Chief Executive Officer of the Restoration of the Dignity of Womanhood ROTDOW, Mrs. Olabisi Omolona, has renewed calls for urgent government action to safeguard the health and rights of women, particularly in the area of maternal care for overall wellbeing of women and children.
Mrs Omolona who expressed worry over the rising cases of preventable maternal deaths, stressing that no woman should lose her life while giving birth.
She urged government at all levels to prioritise investment in maternal healthcare, improve access to quality facilities, and strengthen emergency obstetric services across Nigeria.
According to her, unnecessary maternal deaths are a violation of women’s fundamental human rights, and addressing them must be treated as an urgent national priority.
ROTDOW CEO also commended the AMPLI-PPHI Project on postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) a leading cause of maternal mortality implemented by Jhpiego with support from Unitaid and the European Union.
She described the initiative as a lifesaving intervention that has significantly improved the management and prevention of excessive bleeding after childbirth.
She emphasised that scaling up such programmes nationwide would accelerate progress toward reducing maternal mortality and protecting the dignity and rights of every woman.
Mrs Omolona reaffirmed ROTDOW’s commitment to continued advocacy for safe motherhood, reproductive rights, and the overall wellbeing of women and girls.
