Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has restated his administration’s determination to deliver accessible and high-quality healthcare services to all residents, with special attention to mothers and children.
The governor made the pledge on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, while receiving the UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Ms. Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, and her team at Government House, Port Harcourt. Representing Governor Fubara, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, highlighted ongoing investments in health infrastructure across the state.
“We are constructing new zonal hospitals to bring services closer to the people. The Ahoada Zonal Hospital will be commissioned this December, while several others are nearing completion,” Dr. Anabraba said. He expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its longstanding support and called for deeper collaboration, noting the competence of the state’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, in driving partnerships.
Governor Fubara also urged UNICEF staff working remotely to increase virtual engagement, assuring the organisation of the state government’s readiness to work together for the wellbeing of vulnerable groups.
In response, Ms. Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef commended Governor Fubara’s leadership and the visible progress in Rivers State’s health sector, describing the state as a model for others. She reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting government programmes and made specific appeals for sustainable upgrades.
“We have seen the effectiveness of the Oxygen Plant in Eleme Local Government Area, made possible through a strong public-private partnership. We urge that the plant and newborn care units across the state be solar-powered to guarantee uninterrupted service,” she said.
The UNICEF Country Representative praised the state’s achievements, adding: “Rivers State is one of the states we proudly showcase. Things are working here, and others can learn from your example. You can always count on our partnership and support.”
The courtesy visit underscored the strong synergy between the Rivers State Government and UNICEF in advancing maternal, newborn, and child health, as well as overall primary healthcare delivery. With new hospitals nearing completion and international backing secured, residents of Rivers State can look forward to improved access to life-saving medical services in the coming months.
