Finidi Challenges Rivers United

A palpable sense of frustration hung over the Rivers United camp following their dramatic 1-1 draw against Abia Warriors in a crucial Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 16 fixture on Sunday. Coach Finidi George did not mince words in the aftermath, launching a stern critique aimed squarely at his players’ mental fortitude after they squandered a winning position in the dying moments of the contest.

The game, played in Umuahia, remained locked in a cagey stalemate for the vast majority of the proceedings. Rivers United appeared to have finally secured the vital away victory in the 86th minute when sharp-shooter Maclyn Biokpo found the back of the net. Ubong Friday provided the assist, delivering a “pinpoint cross” that allowed the in-form Biokpo—who has now scored in three consecutive games—to slot the ball past Abia Warriors custodian Okiemute Odah.

This goal, which temporarily put the visitors ahead, was massive in implications; a victory would have propelled Rivers United to the summit of the NPFL standings, even with two games in hand compared to their league competitors.

Déjà Vu and Mental Weakness

However, the elation was brutally short-lived. Just when the final whistle seemed imminent, defensive concentration completely evaporated. Rivers United allowed Abia Warriors’ Suraj Lawal an alarming amount of time and space within the six-yard box to unleash a header that found the equalizer deep into stoppage time.

This dramatic capitulation bears a troubling resemblance to recent continental woes, notably the stoppage-time collapse the Port Harcourt-based side suffered during their CAF Champions League fixture against Morocco’s RS Berkane just two weeks prior. It is this recurring pattern of losing control at critical junctures that has infuriated Coach George.

“It’s all about concentration. What can be done? I don’t know, but we just have to keep working and get stronger mentally to be able to manage the games when the match is almost over,” George stated emphatically in his post-match interview.

The veteran coach insisted the issue was not physical conditioning but a failure in game management under pressure. “It wasn’t a physical thing, it’s a mental thing, about managing games. At that point, it’s not the coach that will manage that for you. We made our changes to fortify the midfield and when you have the ball like that, you have to defend. Kick the ball out but it’s quite unfortunate the time that goal came. We came here not to lose and at some point, we were ahead, maybe the players weren’t thinking we would be ahead.”

George’s comments suggest a deeper concern that his squad perhaps lacked the required self-belief to see out a difficult away win, crumbling when the psychological pressure peaked.

Following the frustrating draw, Rivers United currently occupy third place in the NPFL table, accruing 27 points from 14 fixtures. Their immediate focus must now pivot to redemption as they prepare to face Plateau United in a rescheduled fixture scheduled for Thursday, where they will need to demonstrate immediate mental fortitude to keep their title ambitions firmly on track.
